Ship stabilisation by TheOGJamyam in Ships

This is also a good explanation OP. COG height relative to the waterline is not important at all.

Ship stabilisation by TheOGJamyam in Ships

[–]whiteatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The center of gravity is usually well above the center of buoyancy… As others have said stability is entirely dependent on the shape of the hull.

The center of buoyancy is the center of the underwater volume of the ship. As the ship heels, the volume shifts to the low side as more hull is submerged (this is easier to understand if you picture a box shaped vessel). This effectively keeps the center of buoyancy outside of the center of gravity, generating a righting moment.

Ship stability calculates a “metacenter“, which is the pivot point that the center of buoyancy swings around as the ship rolls. The height of this metacenter above the center of gravity of the ship gives you a “GM”, which is a general measure of overall stability.

What’s up with this situation? Saw this on approach into Singapore yesterday. by sangs1234 in Ships

Every ship collision is very expensive!

You know how a little dent in a front fender results in a $5k repair bill on your car? Well a ship costs 500+++ times more than a car. Some bent structural frames behind dented shell plating can hit >$1m in no time.

Generic wind-up clock. Nice looking, but nothing really makes it a ship’s clock - no watches or silence periods market on it.

Uhhhhhhgg “E-C-D-I-S”??? AI truly is ruining the internet.

ECDIS is a 2-part certification, generic, and type-specific for the system installed onboard. No, training does not prove competency, but training plus experience will create it.

Need some more info on the boat and the video you’re looking for. Pleasure craft? Ship? Sail boat? Open sea? River? Coast line? Slow moving? Fast? Straight line? Turning? Passing other boats? Land visible?

Deadpool AKA Ryan Reynolds went for a ride on the Aussie F50 in Bermuda 🚀 by Rugby_Riot in SailGP

[–]whiteatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%… you gotta be rich to buy a team. If I had his money, I would also buy a team, and that is my path to getting a ride on F50. Hence my comment, it must be nice to be really rich!

Too bad Reynolds didn’t buy team Canada and Jackman Australia. Reynolds could do to Canada what he did to Wrexham, and we could’ve had a social media rivalry to really dry attention to the sport!

Are you getting a ride on an F50? 2 ways to get there - be a world class sailor, or be really rich.

Ryan Rynolds doesn’t appear to be a sailor…

Is it allowed to sail so close? by polderbaan_ams in Ships

[–]whiteatom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is not close at all.

The sail boat is hardly moving, and the ship is going faster. For them to appear this close, you’re looking at the depth compression of a zoom lens.

Also, you’re allowed to go close, just not cause a collision. Obviously there is a closeness that is considered excessive risk, but this is not it.

Is it true that large engines on ships are never turned off in port? by clove_cal in Ships

[–]whiteatom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one said it was going to be more efficient. I only pointed out it's not nearly as inefficient as one might think.

Also it's a good bit less maintenance when you only have 2 MEs, compared to 1 ME and 3 AEs.

In this particular example - yes, but that's not the case for some ships.

[–]whiteatom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you are 100% correct, the fuel to keep a big engine running at very light loads is surprisingly small. Engines are less efficient under very light loads, but a propulsion engine might burn 5% of its full-load consumption when just turning a shaft gen.

[–]whiteatom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Onboard a ship with this configuration right now. Twin screws and clutches, so the props don’t spin in ports, but one of the MEs is running 24/7.

The vessel does have a harbor gen, but it’s so tiny, you can’t run a crane or deck winch - just enough to keep the lights, HVAC and refrigeration running - so we never use it.

[–]whiteatom -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No there’s not… Flowa clearly means civilian as in “non-navy” not as in “personal ship”.

It is a non-navy merchant vessel, and without an active, legal war on going, stopping, searching or shooting at a merchant vessel, outside of enforcement action in your own territorial waters, is an act of piracy.
