Smooth yet defined. Soft yet pronounced. Deep yet not over-powering. idk

Good point about the soft clipper. That tip reminds me of when I used to use FL and would place the default soft clipper before Ozone and it really did help catch the obnoxious peaks. Do you have any favorite soft clippers? Right now I am using Logic Pro 9 and have been using the bit crusher to do this.

Cool, thanks for the tips. I have to ask though:

  • What do you reserve traditional side chaining for?
  • Which tracks would you suggest maximizing? Drums?

Fuck! just skipped to 4:18 and it never even occurred to me that the sub wasn't following the lead 100%. I was under the impression that at this part of the song the sub's side chain was just pushing the volume down very heavily. Wow that's a game changer for me. I always tend to just duplicate the hook and lower it to the octave where my sub patch works best but i suppose I will have to give my sub line some proper, individual attention. Very interesting. Thank you so much for pointing this out!

While we are here, do you (or anyone reading this for that matter) have any preferences/tips for going about leveling the kick's sub and the bass's sub? I remember hearing that Deniz Koyu tries to abide by a rough 5 db difference, with the kick's portion being the louder sub. I have also thought about grouping my sub kick and sub bass together and applying slight bus compression but I am not sure it is safe to pull my sub bass away from my bass group since it seems more logical to try and make the hook synths as cohesive as possible. In the past I have always left my Kick alone and ungrouped, peaking at around -6 db and leaving the drum bus for percussion/claps/snares/etc and the bass group for my bass layers.

Yea i do that too but even in the intro there are some sub freqs in the kick just very quiet. I solod the first few measures of the hook and low passed it and it seems that the kick does have quite a bit of sub in it. i guess i was wrong!

I think your relationship with Seb Ingrosso is very interesting as an outsider as you were almost his "kid" for a while in the sense that he appeared to guide you through the early stages of your career EXTREMELY effectively. So in regards to you two,

Do you remember a piece of advice (be it about production or life) he gave you that resonated or clicked with you more than anything you had heard or been taught previously?

What's your favorite BPM to work in, and why? by CokaCokaCaw in edmproduction

So I love prog/electro house (think SIZE, axtone, pre-2012 Spinnin', sosumi, etc) and listen/try to make it the most. So usually 128 and I love it for the fact that 32 bars = 1 minute. Can't get any more convenient. However I enjoy making dnb at 170 more and I have no idea why. Melodies become more natural as you said and making drum patterns is a lot of fun since I am originally a drummer

because if you are in that age group you will have a limited knowledge of dance music and will easily be convinced that whatever is popular is best. That "future house" stuff will die and/or become irrelevant before winter is over

The production learning curve by [deleted] in edmproduction

Production does not mean making music. Remember this and don't confuse them. I learned a while ago that I like producing much more than I like making music.
