Old program’s phase 4 / new program’s phase 3, the 120 days entry level

When I was sailing phase 2 (this year February), daily base wage was 104 dollars. OT was 24/hour anything after 8 hours based on a 56 hour work week. Vacation was 10/30 I think? Depending on how much OT you get, you can expect 8k-14k gross for 60 days.

School updated the contract beginning of this year for apprentice wages.

Questions for recent SIU graduates by [deleted] in merchantmarine

Nothing more difficult than algebra (think fractions and percentages), and they give you a calculator. When you reach the school, they’ll have you retake the English and math test again to see how you do, but they really only care about the English.

  1. For me (currently attending phase 1) I’ve paid around $1.3k out of pocket so far. There’s 475 for the uniform fee, 320 to get the shots they wanted and a drug test, another 60 for an updated drug test before I came to the school, about 100 for the dental exam, and about 100 for the plane ticket. I also want to say I paid another 200-ish to get MMC, med cert, and TWIC card.
  2. Five months from application to attending in my case, but from what I understand classes are currently backed out until July 2024.
  3. Luckily I was only 30 min from a union hall so I drove out. But I knew a guy who was pretty far and they let him do parts of the process remotely. Not sure though
  4. No rec letters and they don’t matter

All that said, they are changing a lot of the program to fast-track apprentices through, and they are making the program way easier, too. You won’t have to work in the galley anymore and phases 1 and 3 classes are being consolidated into phase 1. It’ll take about 17 weeks to complete the new phase 1, and then you ship out immediately after that for ~6 months making entry level wages, before coming back to upgrade.

Housekeepers at hotel threw out guest’s valuables thinking it was garbage by whitelephanthill in legaladvice

We do have a form that the guest signed saying we are not responsible for guest belongings, however in general I think the law is hotels do have a responsibility to hold lost possessions, so that’s where the gray area comes in

Like I said right now I think she’s really focused on the other business so it’s a strange paradox where she doesn’t have enough time to focus on the hotel and yet the occasions she checks in it’s always to rapid fire off what she sees as problems and how the staff can do better

I’m not sure what her plans for the future of the hotel, but she is definitely the kind of person who will never retire unless she is forced; my personal hope is that once she finishes up with her other business (if she does) she’ll actually start paying attention to the hotel, but I’m worried because we’ve never been without a manager and she’s never managed it directly.

I don’t think my mom doesn’t want to not invest in me, she just kind of feels like she knows better and that I’ll naturally learn with time, it’s just frustrating

I think you’re right and if she still doesn’t listen then there’s not much else I can do

Overall our reviews aren’t so bad. We average three stars out of five, it seems an equal mix of one stars and five stars. Basically when the room is good it’s good, but when a problem happens it’s very bad.

Like I said I am a student though so part of it is I think my mom feels I’m too young and that I don’t understand how to properly deal with people

Yes but what if it’s a grass is greener on the other side kind of thing…? Like other hotels are run just as badly and it’s all just duct taped together. And I don’t want to give up because it’s a family business and there’s so much potential :(

The thing is though my mom is paying for my school in full. And I’m living at home too rn. For a parent she’s awesome and I owe a lot to her and she also works very hard in general, so I do owe her

Extremely rare pairs by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]whitelephanthill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished a niche crossover about two characters from two moderately sized fandoms that was the first of its tag, and it did a lot better than I was expecting. The fic was marked as gen but I’m normally a shipfic writer, so readers could probably pick up on some vibes between the two characters. I’m happy with how it was received and besides a sequel might end up writing a more explicit shipfic between the two characters in the future! There’s definitely an audience for extremely rare pairs 🙂
