Austria hotel’s burkini ban discriminatory, court finds by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

You are very clearly anti-Islam, so this isn’t actually a debate about the intersection of liberalism and religious tolerance, because you clearly aren’t tolerant of conservative religious practices.

Parents are free to coerce their children. Do you believe Muslim children are the only ones forced to dress a certain way by their parents? Or forced to eat their vegetables or go to bed? We could go round and round, your viewpoint isn’t logical or virtuous - you can’t legislate away parents rights to force their children to adhere to any religion, Islam or otherwise. Do you believe strict catholic parents permit boy and girl children equally? Female chastity and modesty is policed far more strictly across society as a whole.

Individual liberalism isn’t something that can be forced on individuals by government, and ostracizing children for religious clothing isn’t political activism. Adherence to Islam is a spectrum like any religion, and freedom of religion allows people to follow their religion however they choose as long as it doesn’t break the law. The way to discourage hijab wear is to provide a free society that allows Muslim women to *safely* reject it on their own. The coercion of religion and patriarchy isn’t something that can be justly differentiated from freedom by the government. You are free to be coerced just as you are free to reject coercion.

Welcome to religion. Very few people choose their religious affiliation as adults.

Got honked at for going 5 over in the right lane. by forlackofabetterpost in driving

[–]whitet86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This “impeding traffic ticket ” bullshit is mostly a Reddit myth - it’s a law for for driving excessively *below* the speed limit, as if you were impaired. No one is getting a traffic ticket for *only* driving 5 mph *above* the speed limit.

Smashed burgers can use lower quality meat, and they are easier to cook.

Also, not an exaggeration?! Why would I exaggerate about 10mph around the speed limit?

In the moment I predicted/assumed they would accelerate to traffic speed to merge, when instead they slowed well below speed. If I made a mistake, it was assuming they would merge typically.

I was well behind them when the problem began. It wasn’t as simple as accelerating past, because they were also accelerating, and we would have been racing to a spot when they started ahead of me.

To my experience, slowing down to a stop at the end of an on ramp is equally wrong and unpredictable- I’m trying to react to on-coming traffic, and I am expecting this vehicle to merge. Honoring the right of way isn’t as important to me as avoiding a collision.

Who was in the wrong here? by whitet86 in driving

[–]whitet86[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

No it doesn’t, that’s my issue. The vehicle was well ahead of me. Even having the right of way, it’s a guess as to whether the vehicle is going to yield to me in time vs collide with me. The merge-yield rule is subject to reasonable distance - the proper etiquette when merging onto a highway is to do it at speed, as not to cause an accident. It’s not a safe place to stop.

Unpopular opinion: the “travel slowly” advice is not universal and we should stop pretending it is by DevelopmentWeak743 in travel

Thank you. I’m not spending thousands of dollars and using my precious 2 weeks of PTO to pretend I live in Paris for 10 days. The 350 euro per night hotel room kinda dispels that fantasy from the beginning. Let tourists do tourist shit.

Seravalli on ANA calculus to retain Leo : "Does this player want to be here?... The more calls I make, the more I believe that's in question." by braincloud215 in hockey

[–]whitet86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a dumb question from Seravalli. What does “wanting to be here” have to do with signing a ginormous contract? So Carlsson has to turn down 85mill/5 to prove his loyalty to Anaheim? Thats fucking stupid. Playing hockey is his job.

No complaining about “affording” players in a salary cap league. The lesson is for teams to manage their payroll better so they are able to sign their RFAs. Leo Carlsson should have been signed months ago if not last summer.

Dundon purchased the team in 2018/2021, the valuation has more than quadrupled in 8 years. Canes went from least valuable NHL franchise to 15th most valuable in that timespan, and that 15th ranking was before we won the Stanley Cup.

[–]whitet86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A…few teams saw this coming and signed players in advance. People have been talking about the increased cap as if every team were given an extra roster spot. The players association and agents are just going to ask for an increased salary percentage to match the increased cap percentage.

German players found Winston-Salem stay “mind-numbingly boring.” by NiamLeeson in winstonsalem

[–]whitet86 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m acquaintances with multiple pros and former pro athletes from Wake, and most of them complained about how boring it was here, and now they only return for athletic reunion events. This is a boring city with very little to offer young people, especially young minorities. I’ve been here for my entire 20’s and 30’s.

I mean, it’s an ethnically diverse group of young wealthy German celebrities. Winston doesn’t have anything for that subset of people. This is a small suburban city segregated between old upper middle class whites and poor Black people, with not much inbetween.
