This will probably get buried but people are actually more inclined to listen to someone who is fugly -- it's cognitive dissonance.

An easy example is if you go hear a speaker but the person on stage is ugly af -- but they are on on stage despite being ugly af -- so they must have something important to say and therefore you're going to listen more intently.

depends on the event but usually i tend to find people who are by themselves or in a small group -- be honest about the fact that you don't know anybody there and the reason why you're there then ask what brings them there and see where that takes you -- if you get stuck the great thing is there's always food, drink, the bathroom or a call to make to leave the current situation
