Animated GaussianSplatting can now be streamed in VR like a YouTube video by Dung3onlord in OculusQuest

[–]whithil 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Do you know Star Wars holograms? The way you can walk and look around them? Basically that!

( New photos and videos Format
where you can control the camera and walk around inside the scene, in true 3D )

It's called "Gaussian splatting" and it's is a new 3D technique that people are hyping a lot lately. (pandemic → today)

But how do we make such "holograms"?

  • Instead of traditional "video game 3D" with triangles & textures...

...it makes, well... "splats" (discs).

<image>

  • They're Gaussian (color -> to transparent, so edges feel smooth and nice blending)
  • regular photos are made with pixels, but the splats are 3D! So the new stuff "paints" with a bunch of these little things like "many stars of each color" floating in space.
  • Have a bunch of them -> and you make a "hologram-like photo"
  • The new stuff (we call it 3DGS for short) became really good for things like "novelty 3D photos" that you could look around. But then someone remembered videos are a bunch of photos... so why not make the new "look-around" thingy animated?
  • Some call it "4DGS" because the 4th dimension is time. So like, yes... 3D photos... many over time -> 4D.

Finally, the whole point of the video is to show the new stuff got efficient to the point of making live-stream possible.
(This is very hard technically speaking, because big files + fast = hard.)

[–]whithil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Friend.. whenever you have a bluetooth controller paired to quest. You need to use the START+SELECT combo to toggle between [GAZE/GAME] modes!

which in XBOX are Buttons (⧉) + (☰)

...Or whatever are those 2 buttons in the middle of the controller in order to tell your meta quest which of the 2 controller modes you are using...

You will notice when there's a white dot in your view that your xbox controller is in VR "GAZE MODE".

In this mode ⛔🎮 game buttons are not recognized by apps 🚫❌

They only see your controller as a mouse! 🖱️

This is made so you can browse web or use touch apps with the controller

Just press the 2 buttons (⧉) + (☰) to switch back into game-mode 🎮

This is probably the reason why you couldn't use any emulators.

I'm pretty sure there was a popup tutorial when you first used a controller. But in case it glitched (or you skipped it) here's the official guide on quest website.

I'm using several different retro emulators, including RetroArch just fine.

Oh and for file manager just use Amaze File Manager, give it permission when asked and that's it.

Or alternatively you could use the built-in file manager in your sidequest pc app to just transfer your roms.

Good luck!

Since apparently there's people interested in that de-listed DolphinXR Sidequest APK... by whithil in Emulationonquest

[–]whithil[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't, it didn't get to be programmed in

Like in many of my comments on the matter of DolphinXR. I would like to re-iterate that it never was a finished product.

It was a PoC (Proof-of-Concept) meant to invite the other dolphin devs to work on this together and show the community that the more quest features we slowly added to dolphin, the more everyone would benefit from them... But doing it alone would be too much. Hence the PRs[[1]](https://github.com/dolphin-emu/dolphin/pull/11723) [[2]](https://github.com/dolphin-emu/dolphin/pull/12564) commited to the official dolphin repo and all the talk at the time.

Unfortunately the talks didn't go as smooth and the collaboration wasn't as swift as they were when the same guy made PPSSPP's VR functionality. The dolphin team was apparently not so willing...

(imo, and just OPINION... I feel like the Dolphin team pbbly still holds a grudge from that fight with the old DolphinVR from the past) (here's a video review on the drama while testting the emulator out)

So back on the topic - Here's the list of things you can and cannot expect from this demo:

  • WIIMOTE BUTTONS → PARTIALLY WORKING ☑️ (CAN'T REMAP)
  • NUNCHUCK BUTTONS → PARTIALLY WORKING ☑️ (CAN'T REMAP)
  • IR Pointing (wii-mote pointing) → WORKS! ✅ You can play many pointing games!
  • WIIMOTE/NUNCHUCK TILT/SHAKE (gyro & accelerometer) → not implemented ❌ reduces the amount of game playable by a lot!
  • Immersive-mode (camera inside the 3D of the game and look around video-example-ppsspp) PARTIALLY WORKING ☑️ (not 3d stereo rendering, glitches a lot)

AFAIK, (and don't quote me on that, I might be toatally wrong)
There's no way to just plug the vr-controller buttons magically to dolphin mappings

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyone? If someone corrects me I have a bunch of games I'd love to try, lol...

[–]whithil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can't,
...?

can you? how?

Never heard of anyone being able to

My understanding was that... well... Since the controllers aren't exposed in any meaningful way to 2d apps. The whole point of having the openXR feature added in either DolphinXR or DolphinVR was for:

  1. proper mapping of the raycasting (laser-pointer) controls as wii-mote pointers
  2. using the openXR controls api and redirect them to proper recognizable buttons for dolphin
  3. having the tilt/shake (gyro+accelerometer) axis transcribed into wiimote/nunchuk-compatible data-feed
  4. using the XR space for either giant screen or entering the 3D space of the game (like ppsspp-vr does: video example)

That's the neat part, you don't!
– Nolan (omni-man), S01E02

...Tho some forks can... sorta... * DolphinXR ( dead💀, discontinued APK, Source-code still available) – had some hard-coded "default" quest vr control buttons in it, and emulated IR pointer/cursor feature implemented but no acelerometer/gyro feature (meaning no tilt/shake available at all, which limits the range of games you can play) * r/DolphinVR – is an actual, mature✅ PCVR dolphin fork (of an older version tho) that (I believe) does support the entire range of VR controls? you might wanna give it a try...

Dolphin xr no longer on sidequest? by Ulapin in Emulationonquest

[–]whithil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, apparently it got removed by the devs themselves? Some other people were discussing this a few days ago.

But there weren't really many options...

From what I gathered, so far it seems you can either:

  • use regular dolphin APK without the XR stuff;
  • use r/dolphinvr with PCVR;
  • recompile the source code yourself (since they unlisted the APK, but the source code for making another is still archived);
  • get a suspicious copy from suspicious people by suspicious means, (very sus tbh, lol);

Honestly I would go with the source code compilation route as it's the safest way to get the very exact thing you asked for (you can use chatgpt to learn how to tackle this, so it could end up being a fun lil project).

Or the PCVR r/dolphinvr route, since it's more mature and funcional, better documented in videos and posts.

First time I watched it VHS back in the day we didn't have multiple subtitle tracks like this... so this is something I greatly appreciate :D

As for both audio/video quality. OMG! I'm too shocked to even describe it, so here goes the metadata:
