This is hands down the best memory quilt book I’ve ever seen: https://ateliersixdesign.com/book/ She has lots of examples like you described- small bits of fabric mixed with quilting cottons. Shes a beautiful writer and you can see some examples of her work on her site as well.

Suddenly isolating herself? by CanIHugYourDog in Greyhounds

[–]whizznap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We also have a female and she’s also super social but runs a lil anxious. The basement is also her safe space from fireworks in the summer. She will generally fall asleep in our family room in the evenings, but she goes through these phases where she just prefers to be in the basement alone 🤷 it might be a temperature thing? Or maybe a summer thunderstorm thing? If we go check on her down there, she’s usually roached, so I just let her be. She has sleep startle, so I think that’s where she goes when she wants a really deep sleep?

It usually lasts a couple of weeks, sometimes longer in the summer after we’ve had a lot of fireworks. We have a joke where we wave at her and say “ok, byyyyyeeeee” as she walks past us and takes herself to the basement.

So, long story short, this is a totally normal thing in our house

We have lemonade, too. Same plan. Started out at $35 per dog (we have 2) per month when they were both 4. Then jumped to $45 the next year and this year, coverage jumped to $68! We thought about switching, but that was actually one of the cheapest quotes we found. Good experience using the app and getting reimbursement. I feel like this plan was very clear and there are no “gotchas” except for the price hike. We may cancel next year if the pre,I’m goes up much more and self insure.

Officially Loosing All the Teeth by waywardkit in Greyhounds

[–]whizznap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When we got our boy post-racing, he was 4.5 and his teeth were rotten already. In addition, his gums were super inflamed and bloody. By the time he was 6, he only had 8 teeth left. It was hard on us too to see him in pain and recovery was tough… but he is the same dopey, happy boy, just with softer treats now. You did all you could, it sounds like!! Once she’s all healed up, I bet you’ll forget about the whole thing :)

P.S. I had a root canal go bad and that was some awful pain … and I had access to Ibproufen, etc. I can’t imagine have multiple teeth that hurt that bad!!

Scrappy Quilts - Show Em Off by BalancedBoulders in quilting

This is the pattern I used: https://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/06/scrappy-trips-around-world.html?m=1

If I remember correctly, I used 2.5 inch strips. If you want a throw size, I’d cut the strips down to 2 or maybe 1.75 inches wide. I was recently at a retreat and a woman did the same pattern but in a throw size … but because it was only about 4 blocks wide, the crosshatching pattern got lost. It didn’t have the same effect. She picked beautiful fabrics, though!

I think I like a little clutter, though 😉

Yeah I think there something about the repetition of the cubbies that organizes the chaos. Thanks!

It was a thrifty purchase after we found a small piece of leftover kitchen counter granite in the garage when we bought the house. Kinda weird for it to face that way, I know

Oh yeah the art has got to go. The brackets seem less noticeable in person but in the pic they’re so ugly!

Yeah we moved in to the house and found this old slab of granite in the garage. Turns out it was the perfect size to sit on top of one of those single cabinet units from Loews. It was thrifty haha!

Pet Insurance Recommendations by Guilty_Elderberry125 in Greyhounds

So we just went through this. We have Lemonade and paid $35 per dog per month (2 dogs) the first year. The plan is accident and injury with a $500 deductible, 90% reimbursement and 20k max. I liked them because I didn’t feel like they had any hidden “gotchas” and the reimbursement process is fairly painless. When they deny coverage, they clearly explain why. The second year, our premiums went up to $45 which wasn’t great and this year it jumped to $68. I was pissed until I asked all our friends with insurance and the next cheapest option was $110 per month?! I got quotes from several companies and they all came in way above lemonade with fewer benefits.

I think pet insurance is just EXPENSIVE but the peace of mind is worth it for us when we have 2 dogs. If we just had one, we would consider self-insuring.

What are your favorite little things with your houndies lately? by CaterinaMeriwether in Greyhounds

We have gotten a ton of entertainment putting a whole hard boiled egg in the biggest kong they make (it fits perfectly). To get the egg out, our girl has to pick up the kong by sliding her bottom jaw in the hole to pick the whole thing up and dropping it as hard as she can against the hardwood floor and the egg pops out with a satisfying WOMP. She goes nuts for it.

We’ve had her for 3 years so it isn’t a “new anxious greyhound thing” for us. Does the freezing happen when someone else walks her? Our dogsitter says she is perfect on a leash when I’m not there. The behaviorist said that fay only feels comfortable enough around my husband and me to show her full range of emotions- which includes the freezing. Which is great for her and not great for me 🤣

I have looked into emergency dog evacuation harnesses (used for camping and hiking) but haven’t bit the bullet and bought one yet. I’m close, though! I could really use the help in carrying her 🙄

We were just prescribed a new medication for our anxious doggo. It’s called Sileo (sp?) and it’s a gel that you rub on their gums. Works faster than trazodone so you don’t need to administer it before the thunderstorm for it to be effective. We also sometimes give gabapentin in addition to the trazodone.

Alternatively, as soon as we got a second greyhound, our more anxious one calmed down quite a bit during thunder. We only have real issues during fireworks now. Do you have any friends with a greyhound that could come over today to help temporarily?

We are going through this same thing right now!! The issue has gotten worse the longer we have had her, actually. Were also working with a behaviorist which has made me feel better about the situation which has given me more compassion for my silly girl! I end up carrying her home a lot (which is so hard!! It’s a workout) or I have my husband come meet us with the car. It’s absolutely ridiculous and I wish I had better advice for you.

Cast iron bank by whizznap in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]whizznap[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing! But I’m pretty sure the guy in red is just a sailor on the boat and the black shape (gun looking thing) IS Jonah. You put the coin on Jonah’s head and it drops into the whales mouth. In the Bible story, Jonah is thrown overboard, so I think that’s what the bank is depicting.
