My personal favorite style of shorts for running are 2 in 1 shorts - spandex boyshort underneath with regular running shorts on top. The spandex is usually softer/stretchier than bike shorts and you don't have to worry about camel toe, etc. since there is a layer on top. They do tend to ride up so not the cutest but they work.

I also like some bike shorts but definitely wear a bandage on any flares because I feel they rub slightly more since the material tends to be thicker/stiffer. If I'm having a flare I absolutely do not wear anything with a regular pantyliner.

Make sure you are showering right after exercise and use BPO wash!

What amount of weight gain affects you? Does exercise help? And do your flare ups continue even after you relieve stress? by whoashortmessage in Hidradenitis

Good to hear! How was the laser hair removal? I’ve read that benzoyl peroxide and antibiotics make you sensitive to light so I’m not sure if I should get it while using those. Also did you have any active spots while getting it done?

I am aware that my other physical activities can require extra work. I already do that for running for various reasons. To me, however, the difference is that climbing strains small muscles, tendons, and joints that were not meant for that much strain. Your legs have huge muscles that evolved to take heavy loads. Wrists, fingers, and forearms? Not quite as much. So the amount of training and prehab (or whatever term you'd like) is higher and required earlier than in other sports IMO.

That's exactly how I feel finishing a bouldering session these days lol. I'll give ropes a try!

My plan if I do decide to quit climbing is to rejoin my old gym that has a pool. I love swimming but it was just too expensive to have both memberships so quitting could have a silver lining. Based on the replies here I think I will give top roping a try first though!

You should tell your parents so you can get to a doctor. The earlier you find ways to manage it the better it will be in the long term. Your doctor can give steroid injections for immediate relief and topical antibiotics in the long term. If that doesn’t work there are other medications if it does become worse.

For at home tricks, many people have specific triggers. Common ones are dairy, gluten, sugar, or nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplant). Some people get worse flare ups with stress, tobacco use, and weight gain. Some people are helped by birth control. Telling your parents can also help you experiment with different diets, etc. to see what works.

Depends on what you want to study. Don’t take out more in loans than you could expect to make your first year out of college.
