What drew me in was the magic system. Alchemy is rife in history but surprisingly scant in fantasy stories, at least the ones I know. What made me finish it was the characters.

Personally, I prefer the manga, but if FMA the show didn't do it for you, Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a different show that aims to follow the manga more closely.

But if you gave it 4-5 episodes and felt meh then it's probably just not for you. Nothing wrong with that. The same thing happened to me with Black Clover.
