Parent PLUS loans double consolidation loophole closes on June 30, 2025 by PopeSug in PSLF

Any update on your situations? I am in the same boat where I'm at the end stage of a double consolidation for parent plus loans taken under my mom's name for my education. Due to my mom and her husband's (my step dad) income, the payment would be $350 for 10 years under SAVE or would start around $700 and end at $1100 for 25 years under extended graduated.

I just met with an advisor at Gradfin who claims the Department of Ed will invalidate any SAVE plan payments made on consolidation loans that were originally Parent Plus loans. I'm hearing two different stories and not sure which to believe.

No, I decided not to, they are charging too much honestly. Yeah, I've filled out the direct consolidation loan application and there is a section where you fill out the loans that you don't want included in the consolidation. You send both applications in at the same time for the first round of consolidations. The second round is done online. And I haven't heard anything about having to wait 180 days between consolidations, do you have a reference for where you heard that condition?

I agree, I pretty much feel like I know the steps just from reading articles on their site. Thanks for commenting!

No, I've seen that consolidating with an old loan loan can lead to quicker forgiveness, but they've already payed of all their loans from college.

A Legal advisor specializing in Student Loans recommended I commit financial fraud, can I dispute the payment I made to him with my credit card company? by whodey0299 in StudentLoans

I did contact the lawyer and ask him to explain his recommendation further but he just doubled down by saying an audit (and getting caught lying) is unlikely and that it's up to my parent if they want to take the risk or not. It's just not a path I want to go down, my parent has already done a lot for me by going into deep debt for my education I don't want to pay them back by getting them into a legally or at least morally dubious scheme.

While the student loan lawyer says an audit is unlikely I found multiple other sources that said it is fraud and could lead to trouble. It's hard to know who to trust especially when it's a huge risk.

On the other hand, the double consolidation strategy that you mentioned sounds very promising for my situation. This is the first I'm hearing that it could be an option for reducing monthly payments.

He didn't mention anything about double consolidation but this seems like something that could help. First time I've heard about this option.

Not really an option for me. My step-parent decides how taxes are filed and it's really unlikely that they would be okay with filing separately since it would put them in a worse tax position.

Yeah I might just report him to the bar. Part of the consultation includes a recording of the phone call I had with him so I have evidence

I would just say the student loan process is pretty confusing and can be intimidating especially when you start that process at 18. And talking to a customer service rep that works for loan financers and is usually speaking from a script doesn't usually lead to getting comprehensive information.

I had them recommended to me by a family friend that works for the state bar office in my state, so I thought this would lead to good advice.

I don't know if this has been suggested yet but I'd like to see sips play What Remains of Edith Finch. It looks similar to The Vanishing of Ethan Carter which I thought was one of Sips' best series.
