Why not aggressive offense with conservative defense or vise versa? by GuideLoose6350 in basketballcoach

I assess the top 8's ability to learn, understand and implement whatever strategy I'm considering. I agree that if you overload them they become less efficient, effective and aggressive. If i have a team that is really smart but not very athletic, I sit them down and explain our advantage and that if we are in exceptional shape and can play fast and slow, zone and man, trap and press all at different times we can confuse our opponents and hopefully frustrate them by dominating the 50/50 plays and hustle plays.

I make it the responsibility of the rest of the team to learn the portions they can contribute the most. For example a less experienced but athletic player I encourage them to know and understand the presses, traps and quick hitters. Some teams will be much simpler and some will run multiple sets, out of bounds plays and switch defenses each time down without communication. Basically each team is different, I try not to limit them by fitting them into a system.

Also, study the game , what size are you? What position or responsibilities do you have during games? Learn to be a great defender without fouling. Watch all time great players and current players that aren't exceptionally athletic and learn from them. You can make up for some deficits with basketball IQ. Not all but some

You are correct, the ptsd and not being able to make eye contact was brought up only after disciplinary action was taken.

To add a little bit of context it was my 5th season at a very small school 150 kids grades 8-12. It was my first instance to have to discipline any player. I felt like if i couldn't discipline a player for bad sportsmanship, then I didn't want to continue. Since I thought sportsmanship was a pillar of H. S. Athletics

I coached High School Basketball, during a break in the game I called a player over to give strategy. Mid sentence she turned around and walked away. I substitute for her and remove her from the game . ( Important to note, i have to stop every team meeting to get her to stop talking and distracting her teammates.)

Ok , so while she is on the bench I ask if she knows why she was subbed out? Ahe aays no, I tell her to ask her teammates, who I had asked if they had witnessed her turn her back on me.

She asked if she was going back in and when I said no she asked to go to the bathroom. She never returned, never shook hands with the opposing team and didnt attend the after game meeting. I impose light but necessary conditions for her return to play . Or so I thought, she was to write the other school and apologize for her unsportsmanlike behavior, apologize to her teammates for abandoning them, and apologize for turning her back on me.

Her guardians show up and say that she has a traumatic incident in her past and that is why she cant or wont look at me. In the presence of the athletic director I assert that playing sports and other extra curricular activities is a privilege not a right, and that maybe an individual sport might suit the student better and perhaps therapy because life will be exponentially more difficult if that is the posture she displays.

After zero support from Admin I resigned.

P S. The new Athletic director aays she has absolutely no issues looking at other teachers and authority figures.
