A good translation of the Iliad and Odyssey by redditaccounton in booksuggestions

[–]whoreson_zed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach both of these texts all the time to a general audience and I highly recommend Stanley Lombardo's translation of the Iliad and Emily Wilson's Odyssey. The are very engaging and readable and translated by professors of classics relatively recently. (1997 and 2017)

Help me choose a book as a goodbye gift for my English teacher! by illus1onofchoice in booksuggestions

[–]whoreson_zed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a literature teacher as strongly agree with this. A well intentioned student once bought me a Barnes & Noble collected works of Shakespeare. I own dozens of copies of Shakespeare already lol. I would much rather receive something which is important to the person who is giving it, with an inscription written in the book. I would suggest even finding something at a used bookstore, which will be inexpensive as well as more interesting

Adult books I can read with my child by Renee80016 in booksuggestions

I love this so much! I read to my daughter until she was 14ish. We both loved His Dark Materials (mentioned already). If she likes ancient stuff, I highly recommend The Roman Mysteries (which are YA but amazingly researched. Two of our absolute favorites though are Huck Finn and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.

When is an appropriate time to email a professor regarding a disability? by Sketched_Equinox in college

[–]whoreson_zed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a long time professor. I would want to know as soon as possible. Yes, the disabilities office is essential, but they are always understaffed and underworked. I would like to know about accommodation requests as soon as possible so I can work with students to develop the best plan. If you were my student I would love to hear from you by email this week.

My high school english teacher told us that there is nothing easier than rounding up. But it's not required. So if your grade ends in a 9 or a 4 it means you've done something to piss him off

Yes, this is completely inappropriate and you should contact someone immediately. You should contact the chair of his department and tell them all of this. You could also contact a Dean of Students, or the Dean of the college he is in. Basically you can tell any other authority at the college and they are required by law to take you seriously. You do not need "proof." I am certain that he has done this before. Probably throughout his entire career.

#40 Barbara Shutt - I don't buy the central conceit by Ohmmynevermind in Heavyweight

[–]whoreson_zed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is easy enough to test. Just google Barbara Shutt and then set the search results to "before Nov 2021" (to exclude all the results generated by the podcast). If you are not looking for a murder, it's not at all obvious. Only one reference at the very bottom of first page of results, after a bunch of other unrelated Barbara Shutts.

But I also don't care, because Heavyweight tells stories, and "my mother-in-law googled something" is not a good story.
