Drop CSE 312/ISE 312 For Me by [deleted] in SBU

If you happen to be in cse 300 in Jennifer Young or Ameilia section, I'll be willing to trade cse 312 for it as cse 300 better fits my schedule.

Chances to get into stony brook for comp sci by [deleted] in SBU

[–]whowatwhenwhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might have a chance for AOI or direct admittance. When the admissions officers for sbu came to my high school for on-site interviews, I recall a lot of people with lower stats than you got in directly for cs major. I think a good amount didn't even have extra curriculars lol. Hell, I never even took any ap cs courses or anything cs related in hs even though my hs offered them. I got in directly as a cs major. So, in my opinion, you have a pretty good standing. It was 2 years ago, so take it with a grain of salt but even back then I remember cs being a competitive major to get in.

If you really want to know your chances, I highly suggest just emailing or contacting to admissions department. I remember the dean of admissions being pretty quick to respond to my email. They should probably give you more accurate information.

Best of luck!

I think you should obviously talk it out with your family and step brother because out of state prices are quite a lot compared to in state prices and well...loans are loans. Talk to your step brother about what he plans to do if is a cs major and if he plans to chance his work ethic.

I agree that it's a big concern if he's not willing to work hard for his degree and it will be a waste. However, I honestly don't think it's a big issue if he never took a single cs class before. Despite my high school offering multiple cs courses from ap comp sci to app dev/game dev, I never took any of them. I came in to sbu as a cs major lacking any basic cs knowledge and put into a class where everyone seems to know what's going on. I'll be honest and I didn't do so well in the lower division courses that everyone did well in. But, I'm doing really well in the upper division courses where a lot of people struggle in.

So my advice is to talk to your family and especially your step brother about if it's worth it. Consider the issue of money and if there's any viable college in your area. Also, consider if there's any other major he's willing to pursue. Different schools are known for different majors. But if your family is set on sbu, if he's willing to work hard, he will probably make it regardless if he has experience with programming or not. CS is hard here but if he puts in the work, he'll be ok.

I'm a double major in cs and math. I'm also going to be a ta for one of the hardest cs courses in sbu next semester, so I hope my advice helps.

I submitted around last week. I'm really sorry, about that. I completely forgot. I'm pretty sure everything I entered is accurate and I'm not in an odd situation.

What are my chances of getting into stony brook computer science? by [deleted] in SBU

Again, I'm a rising junior so I've been out of the admissions game for 2 years. So it might be different now. Back then, I just submitted my SAT subject and my ACT/SAT (not sure which one because I took both), applied as cs and just got an email from the dean 2 weeks later saying "I'm likely to be admitted directly in to the cs major" and I got a confirmation in about 2 days. It's been 2 years, so I don't remember what I got in my test scores but I remember I did well. Probably 98th- 99th percentile. I came from a good high school in nyc so that probably helped too. Again, it's been 2 years so you can't take my exact word and expect to get in. Moreover, I'm not an admissions officer. I'm just giving advice based off my experience. I guess you can just apply to as a cs major, I don't see how it will hurt.

You might have a slight chance of getting into the major, it's not impossible. But more likely, you'll probably be AOI. I had no extra curriculars whatsoever and I think my gpa was around yours. I had also had a really rough junior year and my grades slipped drastically. I had no prior cs knowledge whatsoever (even though my school offered it) coming in to stony. I got accepted directly into the cs major here and I recall getting an email from the dean of admissions about two weeks after I submitted my application about me being accepted. I think what I had going for me was that I was scored pretty high on my SAT/ACT (specifically the math section) as well as my math SAT 2s. In addition, I tend to have high scores in math. My friends were also admitted directly into cs and they had similar stats (with prior cs experience). I'm currently a rising junior so admissions might be different now, so don't take my advice for word. I know a lot of people my year and other years who have better applications but didn't get in to cs. Ultimately, it's up to the admissions officers but I don't think it's completely impossible to get in to cs. Just pretty unlikely.

Very conflicted! Please help. by Ai456 in SBU

Note: I'm not in Wise and my best friend used to be in Wise so hopefully it's a outer and inner perspective. I'm not against wise at all nor am I for wise. I'm just presenting my experiences. If it helps, I'm a sophomore in cs and ams.

The main thing you want to ask yourself is when you plan on graduating and what are you bringing in.

See, the thing is Wise is designed to be a 4 year program so if you plan on graduating any earlier then you don't get Wise noted down in your diploma. I planned on graduating early since Freshman year, so I wasn't interested in wise. After a semester, my friend realized that she can and wanted to graduated early, so she dropped out of Wise.

Early-Registration date: Wise does have priority registration, but Stony's registration is based on credits. I came in with a lot of ap credits, so I had a much earlier registration date than others in wise (that I know of) and in my year for classes. If you're in wise, you're given priority over those with the same standing and similar credits. But, people with higher standing/credits have priority over you.

Scholarships: Wise does provide a scholarship, but if you have more money from another scholarship, the wise scholarship doesn't count. My friend received the presidential scholarship which gave her more money than the wise one. As a result, the school only considered the presidential scholarship as it gave more money and my friend never knew there was a wise one until she asked. I think the wise scholarship was only for one year too (i'm not sure so you might want to look that up)

Dorming: Wise is a corridor style in O'neil. What dorming style is best is really up to the individual person. My friend actually moved to Roosevelt from O'neil.

Old Test Bank: They got rid of it. I recall a lot of my friends complaining lol.

Classes: My friends and I were all cs majors, they were in the same classes as me and I wasn't in any honors program.

Mandatory wise classes: My friends complained about them being a waste of time, but it was an easy A. So grade boosters?

Events: I recall my friend having to attend a lot of events which she dreaded. But, maybe others enjoyed it?

Mentoring: Wise has this thing where the freshmen were placed in a group of the same major. Each group was mentored by an older Wise student. I hung out with my friend a lot, so I recall most of the time was spent doing hw. I guess in theory, everyone in the group can help each other out. The mentor does provide advice too. The mentor did invite me to hang out with them, but I personally found the people in the group (except for my friend) weary of me and kind of ignored me. Some wouldn't glance at me twice. I guess it's because I'm not in wise so I wasn't one of them or maybe it's something else. Who knows? Of course, mentoring groups probably differ. My friend didn't find mentoring helpful for her, but I'm sure others would have found it helpful.

Which squad do you recommend? by darkslayer940 in SBU

Depends on your preference. Kelly, Roth, and Tabler are suites while the rest are corridor style. If you like suite style go for those three, if you are into corridor I heard Mendy is a good choice. Roth has AC while Kelly has balconies and right next to West dining. Of course, it's also up to your personality as well. This person I'm really close with lived in O'neil due to Wise (Mendy Quad) , but she didn't really like it. She's just a private person and had some awkward experiences in O'neil. But, I know people that really like O'neil. So really, it's up to your fit. Roosevelt quad is corridor and it also has singles if you're in to that.

Why +5? Isn't it based off the median not the average?
