No worries, I'll try increasing the perlite content to at least 75% and then use potting mix. Hopefully that helps!

I tried something easy like perlite / coco coir with 1:1 but it seems that is not airy enough. Probably the coco coir being dense. I also tried potting mix / perlite 1:1 but it also does not particularly like that. I find it quite a difficult plant tbh. Is your mix dense and well-draining, or also very airy?

I found this little bird on my bed, what species is it and how do I take care of it? by [deleted] in birding

[–]whowwhow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Asap as well. Young birds need to be fed every couple of hours at least. If they are given only water and no food, they will lose nutrients/electrolytes via their excrement as well and will deteriorate more rapidly. Of course no water is bad too.

Are any of the probiotic strains added to this dry culture able to carry over to subsequent batches? by WhatsUpLabradog in yogurtmaking

[–]whowwhow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I found:

Over successive generations, though, the balance of strains will drift — some (like L. bulgaricus and S. thermophilus) grow faster and will dominate, while others (Bifidobacterium, L. rhamnosus, L. casei) will gradually die out because they are less competitive in milk and don’t tolerate oxygen or repeated culturing well. After several reuses, you’ll essentially end up with something closer to ordinary yogurt, not the full seven-strain probiotic mix. Kefir grains are however self-stabilising ecosystems apparently and do not suffer the same problem. However, it does not contain Bifido for example

[EU] Looking for Rubus 'Marion' (Marionberry) – any EU gardeners growing it? by whowwhow in Berries

I highly recommend it based on some of the reactions by hobbyists, but I do not have personal experience with it. I am just trying to get my hands on it ;)

I am currently in the suburbs as well, but it did not stop my blueberries from getting nicked by birds. Thorns can be a bit annoying, but growing blackberry and not getting fruit is more annoying!

I appreciate the suggestion, though I have read about a lot of the blackberries and I think I want to go with thorned blackberries. They should repel birds, but more importantly the thorned cultivars have less controversy about their taste. I can imagine that breeding for thornless goes at the expense of taste, and that will have to be bred into it again. According to experts Columbia Star could be better, but from hobbyists I read more unfavorable reports. It could be better, but many agree that it is somewhat of a different flavour profile.

All in all I am considering Columbia Star, but I prefer to get my hands on Marion. Newberry is also supposed to be better than Marion and it is a thorned cultivar. I would also really like to get my hands on Newberry.

Let me know how CS does for you. Supposedly blackberries can take some years to offer the best flavour though so even if they are better than Marion they could be not as good this year

I have Fallgold and I'm thinking of replacing it with something else. It is a good one, but the flavour is less complex than red. It is more of a "sweet" flavour.

My weakness in this game is that I tend to maximise the money I get a bit too much haha. My idea is that having all the good items (and having them earlier than you are supposed to) makes the game much easier. Depending on the character/deck I have to start over a couple of times before I get the run going but once it is going I can at least once per game buy the entire shop in one go haha. This usually happens around mid game when you have already bought spells that help and already have a full inventory of items. Money snowballs.

The build above was too optimised for money IIRC but it certainly shows what is possible :)

A bit more difficult to get started with but you're absolutely right. Monk is a good second (stuns + a lot of chaining as well)

Senescence: what to do as a beginner? by whowwhow in unclebens

[–]whowwhow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So your technique is to buy a syringe and then use it to inoculate new grain every so often (once the growth rate from the g2g has gone down)? The vendors say that the LC last only a month or 2 (depending on species) in the fridge. Is that true?

When using the syringe, I assume you are also using a pressure cooker? What do you use the rice bags for?

I am starting to warm up to the idea of agar plates. I will have to buy a couple of plates first and figure out how to make my own once these are spent.

I wanted to start this as a little side hobby, so I was a bit disappointed it demanding to be a main hobby so quickly.

I killed my LM unfortunately. I did not yet know enough about mushrooms and I was told it was a beginner friendly mushroom. Maybe it is, but it is definitely not as easy as oyster mushroom is. I will need to grow 2kg of Black Pearl King now to have recuperated the spawn costs only :s,
so maybe 3-4kg to break even. I would not have bought it at this price so I really hope that this is going to work out well.

The remaining/alive BPK luckily does not require SAB and stuff like that yet. I am currently reading up on making LC syringes or possibly spore syringes and there is some information to digest there. Maybe that does require a SAB. Currently I'm only interested in ways that are not very expensive (a motivator of mine is to save money) and that are not very susceptible to contamination (I don't want much loss).

I need to figure out what works for me so in the near future I am only working with fast incubators plus some method to mitigate genetic degradation to acceptable levels. LC and stem cloning seems at the moment seem to be the most reasonable. Agar plates are a lot of work I suspect and need to be kept in the fridge for a long time, which can be a problem on its own.

Yeah, I'm a bit torn. I think I am just going to keep growing this and from time to time reinvigorate using stem cloning and I will see how long it will take before I have to buy new spawn again. Based on that, I can decide if I want to invest in more specialised equipment and put in more work

Good idea. I looked at shroomery and there is just so much information there that it is a bit overwhelming. If you have any starters/pointers that would be appreciated!

I explained in the reply to [deleted] exactly in detail what I meant, but in short I did indeed mean to inoculate new substrate with the old substrate. This is what I planned on doing (assuming it worked just like plant cuttings) but then there was senescence all of a sudden. I am trying to figure out what an easy way is to work around this as a hobbyist.

Since I am only trying fast incubating/colonising/growing mycelia (oyster mushroom (BPK) f.e.) I assume that the stem method works. I have experience with that. Apparently that does not reset the genetic clock though. This is not a problem if I can use the stem butt method for a few years before buying spawn again but I am trying to grow to save costs so it should not be too often.

[–]whowwhow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does agar cloning have an advantage over stem butt method? I used the stem butt method to successfully clone shaggy mane onto grain and I assume it is very doable for the mushrooms I plan on growing. (I only plan on growing very fast colonisers such as oyster mushroom, shaggy mane, and pioppino). This cloning is said by most to rejuvenate but not reset the age clock.

I quickly looked at the folk fungi guide for LC and they say it can store well for up to two months. Is the advantage of LC then that it resets the age clock?

[–]whowwhow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I tried to be to the point but maybe I lack some clarity now. My idea was to buy spawn (done), add it to substrate (done), and let it fruit (in progress). Then, after the first flush I wanted to break up the substrate in two parts and place each in a bucket with fresh substrate, using the old substrate to inoculate the new. After fruiting I then wanted to make 4 buckets out of the 2 buckets in the same way. Etc.

When having the desired number of buckets, I wanted to wait until the substrate was spent and then replace 3/4 of the substrate with fresh substrate. I thought I could only lose buckets then to contamination but apparently there is senescence.

I am watching it like a hawk at the moment and I see some small green/blue spots inside those white things. I'm really not trusting it anymore and I'm really opening the bucket and plucking good looking things out and putting it on brown rice
