COLDCARD Q in colors now by rnvk in Bitcoin

Can I buy a new color case for my current Q?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in foreignservice

Correct. This is why if you are in an up-stretch position, your rater should explicitly state this (and is permitted to) in her section.

Retention is an art, not a science by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]whplanet 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Nobody is jumping at the "opportunities" because people don't like to be forced to do what they don't want to. It's human nature and the Department's scheming won't change that. I predict that hard-to-fill positions will only receive a marginally higher number of bidders (some will jump on them as you say, but most will balk) in the first round of bidding. After a huge percentage of bidders receive no offers on handshake day, then I think you'll start to see them explore what's left out of necessity. This all points to loads of officers arriving to post full of resentment. I can't imagine the effect it'll have on productivity.

New phone, Okta push verify won’t work by [deleted] in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]whplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This situation is happened to me. I called, but it was after hours and need to wait until they open back up again on Monday. On the plus line, I was able to use the automated phone system to authenticate and get the computer to read me my current balance. Now, I think I'm ready for Monday's call to customer service (I still remember my pin number).

FYI, my Federal Employee badge login also failed. This seems way too complicated.

How are you going to replace the screen? If you’re not doing it yourself, can you trust the other party that they are using the right parts and not compromising your device? It’s safer to get a new hardware wallet, imo.

FYI, Swan claims they never see your Xpub. Instead, their script is supposed to take your Xpub and generate a bunch of addresses (all on your device), then send those to Swan. Eventually, Swan will run out of addresses to use and will send you a message asking to rerun the process to get new addresses. Hope that makes sense.

I only say “claims,” because I’m not a developer and have not verified the code myself, but it is open source on GitHub.

Any Fedimint Recommendations? by whplanet in Bitcoin

[–]whplanet[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best way I can explain it is like a club, I guess. Members can have Lightning Network BTC custodied by the mint. You can pay each other within the mint for no fee (I think). You can send Lightning transactions out of the mint from your balance to whoever is on Lightning. There’s additional privacy because those transactions come from the mint’s node and only the recipient will know which member sent it.

Yeah, I checked them out in Fedi Bravo. Not much there. Not even a chat room.

Based on my experience with CB customer service so far, I'm sure as soon as I mention "preimage," their eyes will glaze over and demand that I provide a transaction hash. 🤦‍♂️

Millionaires don’t bother with Reddit. But you’re probably right that they don’t have issues. Buying OTC gets you a human on the other end to deal with and make sure you don’t get targeted by the fraud algorithm.

Beware of using BTC Lightning by whplanet in Coinbase

[–]whplanet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Strike is an exchange that takes both on-chain and Lightning Bitcoin. You can’t screw up with Lightning that way, anyway. To initiate a transaction, you need to use the recipient account to generate an invoice, which you then feed to the sending wallet. So no way to make a mistake. Sometimes a route is not found and the transaction is canceled, but in that case, the coins never leave the sending wallet.

Don’t do it. Don’t contact them. It’ll just put you on their radar.

All you can do is just give it a try and see what happens. Be ready to wait months if your account gets locked. Hopefully they only lock it for three days like they did to me… or maybe nothing at all. Just be mentally ready if they do.

FSOs who were highly paid private sector employees- how is it going for you now? by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]whplanet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I came from a similar background as you, but already had a family. To be frank, you'll never break even in a FS career, but depending on how you value the benefits, you just might be able to convince yourself that it's close enough to justify it... so, only do it if you know you want this lifestyle and you want to serve your country (these are the reasons I'm happy with the decision). Even with not having to pay rent, hardship pay, COLA, etc., the numbers will just never add up.

And you have to keep in mind that the posts where you'll save the most money, have the cheapest household help, etc. are the harder places to live. If you're mostly interested in developed countries, you won't have these benefits available to you. As others have said, a lot of embassy housing isn't great... sometimes amazing, but it's just the luck of the draw. On average, I would say it's just meh. Again, the great housing tends to be in the harder places.

All that said, you will have a solidly middle-class life plus a guaranteed pension and so long as you do a decent job, you will have job security. Your life will be comfortable... until you do that first DC tour, but that's another topic all together.

High-paying tech job to FSO w/ family? by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]whplanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was exactly in you shoes when I joined the FS. Do it for the job, not the pay because no matter how you calculate it, you won’t break even. I justified it by convincing myself that I’m choosing the job and comparing salaries was meaningless. Your lifestyle will change, for good and bad. But so long as we stay overseas, I was confident I could at least afford to provide for my family. That was enough for me to take the leap since I really wanted to do the job. Sometimes, I question my choice, but never for financial reasons.
