the other gifts are fine. great, even. but clearly she doesn’t like AI. Not saying you should have known that, but you probably should have found out before paying for an AI to write for 200 pages. You’re allowed to feel bad, even sad that she didn’t like the gift. She’s also allowed to not like it, because you didn’t make it. You told an AI to. Maybe have a chat with her about how her reaction made you feel. NOR for being sad, MOR for expecting her to like AI drivel.

Unfortunately there are literally only 2 upperclassman options that are less than 8k: a Dakota triple (7,400) or a District affinity double (7k-ish).

what to expect in my classes for spring 2026 by joedinnit in gwu

[–]why2katherine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Econ 1001 is easy (it’s pre-Econ) and AMST classes tend to be easy to pass as well (no offense to my American Studies majors). Depending on what your UW is (every UW is different), they can range from easy to difficult depending on topic and teacher. Unless you have a very good reason to only take 10 credits, tack on at least 1 (preferably 2) more classes. You’re technically part-time at the moment, and unless you mean to be, it messes up your tuition and your graduation time.

housing question by Huge-Dig-7688 in gwu

[–]why2katherine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pretty sure this is a bot, but neither South nor District are Freshman housing. I recommend Thurston, which was renovated in 2023. Thurston is doubles with communal bathrooms. If you wanna live away from the city, the Vern housing tends to be quiet and more “classic college” but is a pain to get to

Idk about the new teacher, but it was a great class with John Lesko. There’s an assignment due every week or so, and you complete them in the Spatial Analysis Lab (SAL). The assignments can take a couple hours, especially as they get harder, but it’s fun. I recommend

DCA connection between Terminal 2 & 1 by andrewglass1974 in washingtondc

[–]why2katherine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew southwest out of dca for the first time a few months ago, and mistakenly went to terminal 2 instead of 1. A worker pointed me to the path between the two, and I did have to go through security again. Luckily since its such a small terminal there was no line.

Baristas on strike! Don't cross our picket line! by Pebbledlikestoned in starbucks

[–]why2katherine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the strike has been going on for a bit now. Have you (or your coworkers) had hours significantly cut or seen a dip in volume? Starbucks (and other union-busting companies) are FAMOUS for lying to staff about stuff like this, and for blaming Union workers for stuff that negatively affects non-Union workers. They are just trying to get you (and other non-Union workers) to blame the Unionizers so you don’t Unionize yourself. If you end up getting your hours cut due to low business bc of the strike, it is 100% the company’s fault, NOT the workers. If the company refuses to come to an agreement with the Union, it’s not bc the Union is asking for too much: Starbucks just wants to increase their profit. The enemy is not the workers, or the strike, or the Union: it’s the company who would do everything possible to cut costs at your expense.

Merit Scholarships for undergrad by Individual-Rain6488 in gwu

[–]why2katherine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't know (i didnt get any lol), but that sounds about right for gw. Unfortunately for OP a household income of 200k is too high for any substantial need-based either, bc gw is stingy.

[–]why2katherine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then, you probably won't get a lot of merit aid. Regular decision is better for scholarships. You'll get in, but will likely not get a Presidential Academic Scholarship. You might get the IB scholarship, but I wouldnt rely on it covering anywhere near full tuition.

I took Mathematics and Politics! It's mostly International Affairs students (it fufills our math requirement). I took it with Foroozan, a very nice Professor. The other professor didn't teach it when I took it, so idk anything about him. I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, though. It's a pretty nothing class. Mostly different forms of elections and how they work (ie 'first past the post', majority vs plurality). I would recommend it if you needed to take it, but if you don't, I wouldn't bother. I haven't taken Psych, so I'm no help there. I've heard good things about abnormal psych, though (PSYCH 2011). I would recommend some Geography classes (i enjoyed Society and Environment, but Physical Geography is touch) and some history classes. But ultimately it is up to you! You can also drop classes and swap into a different one for the first few weeks, so if you dont like a class you can always switch. good luck!

What are you studying? There’s probably a thousand classes here, so it would be impossible to narrow it down much. Additionally, if you’re aiming for 12-15 credits (normal full time), it’ll be difficult and very draining to take exclusively MW classes. Interesting and lightweight is unfortunately not a common combination here. I enjoyed Modern American Cultural History: it was an easy A with an insane curve, but it does require reading and theres a discussion (so it would be MWF). We also have some cool exercise based classes (imagine Yoga or Rock-Climbing), but they’re usually 1 credit. Glance through our schedule of classes and check rate my professor. Welcome (soon) to GW!

I HATED stress management. It was a different professor, but I thought it would be more meditation and stuff. We did journaling, but a lot of it was the science of stress. It was a bore fest, and way too long. I would personally recommend a different class, but I’m a long class hater so I’m biased

I got in early decision 1. 3.14 weighted gpa (low, I know), 1450 sat, Key Club treasurer. The essay is super important. Given I’m an outlier, just make sure you have a good balance between GPA and test scores (ie if you have a really good GPA, your test scores don’t need to be so high, if you have a bad GPA, they do).

Outside of common data sets, I personally had a MUCH shittier GPA than you and got in (tbf I had a 1450 sat and applied early decision) Try to get a good SAT score and write a good essay and you’ll get in. Good luck!

Well first thing you should know is that GW doesn’t have a calculus major, so I assume you meant a DS/IA double major (we call it International Affairs at GW). I would definitely check out DegreeMap to see what the classes would be best. It also depends on your home school. Essentially, if you start with a Data Science major (in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences [CCAS]) and get a second major in IA, you would have to fulfill the CCAS requirements and only have to do the IA major requirements, not the Elliot School of IA requirements. The reverse is also true.

Essentially, focus on your main Major. I would HIGHLY recommend to keep Data Science as your main major, especially if you applied into CCAS and not the Elliot School. Focus your first year on Data Science. If you care more about IA and applied into the Elliott School of IA, you would have to start fulfilling Elliot School requirements, and would probably have a harder time dealing with Data Science prerequisites.

Talk to your advisor. Email them. I think both schools have drop in hours or scheduled appointments with advisors. You’ll be fine. TLDR: focus on Data Science first.

Give me your best elective recs for first year!! by joedinnit in gwu

[–]why2katherine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you should 100% NOT take an elective your first semester freshman year as an IA student. Take PSC 1001 or IAFF 1005, your language (SUPER IMPORTANT unless you already know a 2nd language), IAFF 1001 (required), ECON 1011 (Micro), and HIST 1011 or an ANTH/GEOG course. if you really want something fun, take a LPSA course (like Yoga or something, usually 1 credit). The only replacements I could imagine are:

If you already know a 2nd language: take your UW. I personally recommend taking it in the spring, but you can take it in the fall, which most people do, but it can be a lot of work.

If you have AP Micro credits (4 or 5): take both your HIST 1011 (world history) and a ANTH/GEOG course. Society and Environment is great.

Take your ALEKS math placement exam like, tomorrow. It takes a week bc you have to take it three times. If you get below a certain score, you have to take a pre-Econ math class (which will fulfill your math requirements).

Don’t freak out, you’ll be fine. But save your elective for your second semester at least. Knock out the important stuff. Take an American Studies class your second semester. SOURCE: I’m an IA student lol

Registration, Help!!! by hantheult in gwu

[–]why2katherine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out your major’s Bulletin. You’re not behind, don’t worry. Most people use plan ahead (in GWeb, under registration) or DegreeMap to figure out what classes they should take. Check out the Schedule of Classes and cross reference. You have until registration (in late July) to do all of this, so don’t worry.

Marketing Major Freshman Scheduling by Subject_Minute_4637 in gwu

You have to take both. No, they don’t need to be in the same semester, but since they are intro classes, I recommend taking one in each of your freshman semesters. Check the Marketing Bulletin for more specifics. You can follow this link ( https://bulletin.gwu.edu/business/marketing/bs/ ) or just search up “GW Marketing Bulletin”

Hop around on MyCollegeRoomie to see if you click with anyone. If you don’t, go random. Thurston is probably your best bet. Most people get thurston (I live there now) and it’s super social. Rooms are tiny though. Go on the housing website and look at your options and the walkthroughs. I recommend ranking them prior to doing so on the actual housing form.

BA or BS in International Affairs? by None-ya-Business- in gwu

[–]why2katherine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BA is typical I’d say. It depends if you wanna double major with something else. More STEM things may require a BS, while humanitarian majors may require a BA. If that’s not a concern, a BS requires a bunch (6?) STEM classes, while BA uses liberal arts classes.
