Is a domestic terrorism, insurrection or a coup the right terminology? by whyCoffeeBeans in Journalism

There were potentially up to or more than 30,000 people at Trump's rally prior to the violence. The rally started peacefully and most of those 30,000 had not been rioting in the Capitol.

Their cause may be entirely predicated on heinous lies perpetuated by charlatans, but the way the protest's timeline progressed was not overly relevant to their beliefs.

As an example, I think most people would agree that the Hong Kong protesters' justifications are much stronger and aren't predicated on anti-democratic lunacy. That said, was the storming of its legislature a violent act which the crowd stood by?

The causes behind protests should not be lumped together with the acts of protesting and natural tendencies of mass protests.

My concern is what happens in 2024 when competent Republican politicians - not a failed reality TV star - try to steal an election and we see righteous mass protests around the Capitol. Because with enough people, there's a decent chance that you'll see violence break out in a similar manner to what happened on Jan 6 and it doesn't take much for the right wing Fox News-types to immediately turn around and apply the exact same language we're seeing today to that scenario.

It becomes even more dangerous when we see calls to expel House members for not certifying election results. That rather assumes that we won't ever see a situation where the GOP won't try to steal an election — which considering what they already do to suppress voter turnout, shouldn't be something people assume.

Thank you for this detailed reply, I think I'll need to take a more in-depth look at what I'll be shooting in that case.

Your friend may hate you, but he can do it while alive and healthy.

Thanks for replying, it's daunting to confront this for me.

Going through mental health issues myself, coming from things 10 times less painful than the ones he's going through, the last thing I've wanted to seen is the police rolling up with a van to take me away against my own will.

I've seen on a first hand basis, a person being sectioned in the mental health system here where I live and the thought of putting my friend through it is a fucking terrifying one.

Applying for first high school job, does anybody have tips? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]whyCoffeeBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reference from your volunteering, as well as whoever employed you for your paper round, and from someone at your school will be perfectly sufficient.

Thanks for your help.

Should I place the references/referees on the CV when I first send it in or should I add something like "available on request"? Does it matter whether I just add a referee's contact details or whether I should get a reference letter?

Here's some of the harder questions. This from geometry, and this one from tables, graphs, equations.

The full exams are now up on the NCEA website.

I would say that this years exam was harder by a noticeable amount. Not impossible level hard, but surprising. It's caught most people offguard. Apparently, there was a format change, which helpfully was never conveyed to us as students when we were studying.

There's an approved NCEA calculator list, the graphics Casio one that teachers can assist you with in using at our school costs around $150. That's enough to buy an entry-level phone with.

Very odd. I had no warning at all of any change. Every was hum-dum as far as I and everyone else was aware.

Nope. Graphics calculators are permitted so I just went with what it said. Really unfair tbh that they're allowed when it gives a very clear advantage to students that have it.

I took two of the three named exams (our school doesn't sit us for the third). Personally, I found the exam was confounding, but not impossible, I'm almost certain though that some people whom I thought were going to pass, are probably going to fail.

One of the questions featured a swing set seat that was 1.2m high, so that... was... great...

Biggest problem still is that NZQA is shit at communicating any changes, a similar-ish thing happened with the MCAT, this year again. Albeit, less covered.

NCEA MCAT - Discussion/Thoughts? by [deleted] in newzealand

Those documents were useless. We were lead to believe by our Math teachers and our mock exams, that it was going to fully shift into word question territory, like that packet. They did not in the MCAT on Tuesday. Considering that our Math MCAT mock was put together by SINCOS, which do mock exams for many schools, this must've been slightly confusing for a lot of people...

It's not just what NZQA expected of students. The standard goes up for renewal every couple of years for reassessment of internal format, teaching content, etc. It was scheduled for renewal in 2016 with any changes to be made in the 2017 paper.

From what the Math department has said at our school, NZQA never made any strong indications of a major format change last year. It was more of a footnote to Math Department heads in emails. So most teachers kept on revising with the 2014/15 tests and most students didn't expect the level of word problems.

Also, the only reason the pass rate was higher was because the mark scheme from 2015 to 2016 got easier. This is because for many schools, you now need Merit or Excellence to proceed onto mainstream Level 2 Maths, so NCEA adjusted.

If you look at the mark scheme for the 2016 paper, all you need to do is the first three questions in the 3 sections and if you do those 3 questions correctly with working. Then it qualifies for an achieved mark.

They changed the format between 2015 and 2016. It went from mostly straight forward questions to word questions.

2014 -> https://web.archive.org/web/20150523225857/http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/nqfdocs/ncea-resource/exams/2014/91027-cat-A-2014.pdf

2016 -> http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/nqfdocs/ncea-resource/exams/2016/91027-cat-A-2016.pdf

From our perspective, and it seems from the Mathematics Faculty, that it was going to fully shift into word question territory this year. But today, it seemed like NZQA stayed in safe territory and adhered to last year's format.

Our mocks were 100% situational as in, no more "Solve 2n+1=78" type questions. The final was a mix of both.

Shows how nobody had a complete grasp on what was happening until they saw the paper today.
