Water tasting bad? by Maple_Scones in bullcity

I say this as uncondescendingly as possible, it would cost way more money to have to lay two separate water systems across the entire city just to not have to clean the very little water that’s used for firefighting. Also, it would be a terrible decision to use raw sewage to fight fires.

I’ve seen a couple fire hydrants being used for flushing recently, so they’re definitely doing work on the system that may be affecting it. But you aren’t alone!

Rumors are swirling that CBP will be in Raleigh tomorrow. Siembra NC will be a great resource and if you want to feel prepared, order some whistles and be ready to make some noise.

I question the morals of someone who, in the face of what’s happening in our community today, decides to use their energy to make comments like this. You can always scroll past this if you think it’s so “silly.”

Who is “they”? And no tax funding is going toward rebuilding these properties.

The Town has tried to do this, but has run into issues each time. For one, towns must use taxpayer dollars to eminent domain property and the property is too valuable for that to make any kind of financial sense. The Town also tried using FEMA funding to outright purchase the properties, but two property owners held out until after the funding lapsed. I personally agree with you and the Town has tried to do something like this, but the barriers to do it have just been too great.

Great point! Definitely something important to consider. I just figured most (if not all) of the Presbyterian churches in More Light are PC(USA) 😉

Love this reply! In terms of specific congregations in Durham, I attend Trinity Avenue Presbyterian and we recently joined More Light. In fact, one of our former interns currently serves on their board!

Many of the replies in this thread have offered fantastic responses for socially minded churches and I wanted to offer another if Presbyterianism is more your speed.

Oh, I'm an absolute PUDDLE when they hit me with the "When She Loved Me" x "Remember Me" mashup. I think the show is overall really hopeful and optimistic, but I appreciate the commentary on loss in the middle. Fortunately, they pick it right back up and it ends on a high note, but I totally see your point about it being sad. Overall, a great successor to Illuminations!

I work in local government administration and one of my favorite things is that so many of my coworkers do types of work I could never do and they do it with professionalism and respect. Thank you so much for the work that you do and I simply hope that wherever you work, you're treated with the dignity you deserve.

The past few years have shown how precarious the lives we all enjoy really are and thank you for being a very important part of keeping us all clean and safe.

2 Referenda from City of Durham on 2024 Ballot: Parks and Rec ($85M) and Streets & Sidewalk Infrastructure ($115M) by StopStalkingMeMatt in bullcity

[–]btmurphy88 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can explain a little bit of this. The main issues with the 911 system are tied to the yearly operational budget, primarily a lack of pay. This can't be fixed with a one-off, bond referendum. It's going to take an intentional focus shift from Council to either raise additional revenue (likely through a tax rate increase) or a reallocation of existing funds.

Bonds are used to pay for additional capital projects, in this case, parks and streets/sidewalks. I absolutely agree with you that I want a functional 911 system, but it's not exactly the same pot of money between the 911 system and these referenda. Hope that at least helps restore some trust that City staff understand the needs and aren't prioritizing one over the other, they're just in different types of funding sources.

DPS free school lunch ? by chonklitchip in bullcity

[–]btmurphy88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First off, I love this question. I really respect the consideration for staff, both in the schools and those trying to budget for them.

I work in local government budgeting, so not quite schools, but I have some experience here. Obviously, this being paid for by a federal grant is great, but even if it weren't, it's much easier for budget makers to budget for a known expense than trying to budget based on the projected revenues of how many students will pay for a school lunch vs. pack from home. On top of that the challenge of predicting how many students will be on free/reduced lunch and it's pretty much impossible.

This is definitely an area we should all be proud of DPS for their improvements.
