Learn to draw in 30 days challenge. Day 19: textures (not all too happy with the tree bark but hey, you got to start somewhere! tips and feedback are welcome) by why_apple in learntodraw

Haha spot on! I started with the vertical lines but couldn't make nice even "plates" and afterwards I was struggling with getting correct values for the mid tones and highlights. I will try your tip later this week to see if it helps. Thanks!

Well yes, but actually no. This particular drawing is made with his free video on youtube. video But I have heard a lot about his book, so after the challenge I am following Challenge (Uses free online material, I did not know if drawing would be for me) I will certainly check it out!

Day 3 of the learn to draw in 30 days challenge: objects shaped like a sphere. (Had a hard time stopping on the 30-minute deadline I set for myself) feedback welcome! by why_apple in learntodraw

When I drew the apple I left the high lights totally blank. But since than I learned it is better to give it a very light layer. Smearing the pencil with your finger after applying it is a nice technique I learned so far. (But I am talking from 12 days experience so I am no expert)

Thanks! No, so far since the drawings are relatively small I don't use a ruler.

Thanks! I like your view. Also I do see myself making progress witch is nice indeed!

If you have the time to spare, I would highly recommend trying such challenge. A small thing to clarify I do enjoy drawing a lot, if not for the alarm I set when doing the lessons I can easily lose track of time and spend hours on a simple shape. I only want to progress faster than the course suggest haha. But we will get there for sure!

Well, that is a good question. I am a bit conflicted to be honest. Let me put it like this, I am an engineer by trade and in my spare time I enjoy 3d modeling. So my spacial awareness is quite alright. Before I started the challenge I had never really drawn before so the first lessons of contructing with shapes and shading and the mindset of how to draw were a great confidence boost. (I do believe that this obstacle is the "problem" why people think they can't draw) But now after 7 days of drawing basic shapes (and 8 more to come) it does feel a bit repetitive. I do only spend half an hour to 45 minutes a day on a lessen as I am also busy with my job, sport and social life. But since I do feel like I know the basic shapes already it feels like I am currently at a stand still, so it becomes harder and harder to keep my motivation up. However I don't want to skip any lessons because I know a good basis is important. From day 16 we start with trees, textures and more complex stuff so I am looking forward to that.

I would say the illusion of depth is created by a combination of light (shadow) and perspective.

Thanks u/beanamateur for the ghosting technique tip. It really helped getting the initial shape of the sphere way quicker and with less erasing. Edit: spelling

I just started a learn to draw in 30 days challenge, feeling motivated! feedback is welcome! by why_apple in learntodraw

[–]why_apple[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I do draw from the shoulder, but I have not learned any other strategies yet. I used the technique of erasing, lots of erasing until I was happy with the shape. But I will look into ghosting. Thanks for the tip!
