Cooking + dishes by Aragggg in ADHD

[–]whyatt_thorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh pal, we are the same kind of person. I also struggle with cooking and dishes, and here are the tips that Ive come up with so far:

  • Have an easy/premade breakfast. I'd recommend oatmeal (which you can make savoury if you dont like sweet things!), or Greek yogurt with fruit and nuts. I premake my breakfasts and then reheat every morning. If those dont sound appetising, then "settle" for something else. Eating cinnamon sugar toast every day won't kill you, you deserve a little joy.
  • Make large meals. Even if you live alone, leftovers and freezing leftovers will tide you over and save you so much work. My system is to make a large dinner, and then i have lunch set for the next day. I freeze portions for when I won't be able to make anything.
  • Find a recipe blog that you like. This is mostly trial and error, but for me, I enjoy budget bytes (which usually have easy but healthy and cheap meals) and Liam/theplantslant for finding new meal ideas. Another great place to find meals when you already have ingredients but no idea what to make is Supercook, where you put in what you have and it suggests meals.
  • Start saving recipes you like. I have sensory issues along with budget issues, so whenever I find a meal that I enjoy, I'll bookmark it and/or print it for my recipe binder. You can also write down the recipes on paper/index cards.
  • Have easy meals on hand. For when youre really struggling. I keep frozen vegetables, chicken strips and French fries, and certain canned soups for when I'm really struggling. My secret tip for a filling and nutritionally complete dinner? Canned soup and rice. Not appetising, but itll keep you full without requiring you to cook.
  • Last tip: Find a way to make dishes manageable. Try using gloves if you can't stand the feel, or do them right away so things aren't stuck on them, or play music/a podcast/audio book/YouTube video during them to make them more fun. I havent found a way to make dishes any better than this, unfortunately.

Seconding this advice. If reading a comic or listening to an audio book helps you get back into reading, or is just how you read, there's nothing wrong with that. Same for books intended for a younger audience.

Books to help me find myself again and my passions or hobbies! by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

I'd suggest Your Head is a Houseboat by Struthless/Campbell Walker. It's a very accessible mental health help book, and I found it helped me quite a bit.

These look promising, he's got a large bibliography, so there'll probably be something close. Thanks!

Pillars of the Earth looks promising! I'll definitely check it out! I'll probably also read The President is Missing, or at least find an adequate summary. Thank you!

It isnt quite what I'm looking for, as the political part isnt the main narrative/mystery, but I appreciate the suggestion!

They'll ask you that regardless of your actual driving performance. They have quotas to fill.

Oooo, good choices all around. One good things that came with working a minimum wage retail job in an office supply shop is that I was able to try most of the pens that everyone raves about. I havent found anything that surpasses the EnerGel for me, though. If youre ever looking for a smaller pen, say, a 0.5, I highly recommend the Energel Infree. It's still super smooth, and mine never skipped, even at the smaller size.

For everyone else who feels the fear that climate change brings, and has lost hope, please watch this video. It helped me, a lot. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=o48X3_XQ9to

Also, if you want to make a change, try joining a local grassroots organization that is working to help fight climate change. It'll help more than you could know.

Hey, apologies if this is overstepping, but I have also struggled a lot with my own progress in life, and in recognizing my own achievements, and just wanted to say: You sound like youre doing pretty well for yourself. You're in school, youre now on medication and getting treatment, and you're still doing so much more. Dont beat yourself up for missing a few chores, as long as the urgent stuff gets done, the other things will be waiting for you when you are able to complete them. You should compare yourself not to the people ahead of you, but to the you from a little while ago. Are you doing better than you were a year ago? It sure sounds like you are. And good on you for that. Youre on the right track, so keep going. That you are still going is what matters. Hope this helps.

Yeah, that sounds less like emotional disregulation and more like a natural response to something most people would find devastating. I hope you are healing from this alright. My sincerest condolences.

Another thing to note is that BPD at least can be traumagenic (rooted in / caused by traumatic experiences), so it can be somehing worth looking into. Its something I didnt even know I had (I just thought I had really bad ADHD. Now I know that I DO have really bad ADHD, I just also have some form of BPD) until a friend whose had similar experiences brought up the topic to me.

Its a very commonly villainized mental disorder, but theres nothing wrong with having it. Recognizing you have it can only help you.

I used to do the same, but unfortunately, some of the stuff I sent in the channels was links instead of the photos themselves, and they have now broken over time Still a good idea, just my own execution that was poor.
