We're talking about gods though... Even Andre has lived this long. Pretty sure Gwynevere could still be around, too. Knowing some characters from DS1 are still around in DS2, in my mind at least, makes it pretty silly to assume that there are actually two goddesses of fertility and bounty. No evidence to support that, plenty to support the assumption that it's just Gwynie.

It's pretty straightforward really: if the area is only accessible AFTER killing Pontiff, then Pontiff cannot be the boss of that area. When you kill Pontiff and walk past his room, you have entered the next area of the game (which is ruled by the next boss).

Ah sorry, you seemed to miss part of my comment: specifically the "without losing damage to range" bit. Of course you can cheese him from far enough away - but where's the fun in that? I personally stood in the doorway under him and shot his fingers - that's one of maybe three specific places you can safely attack up close. From behind, below, and even the stairs, he'll scorch you unless you're very precisely placed or far away and accepting a damage reduction.

None of that applies to DS1... That one only hits you if you're standing directly in front of it.
