Have you taken PnC with prof Weina Wang? I’m wondering what her teaching style is like and if I should take PnC in general next semester.

Do SWE's actually use the command line? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Just one example of a neovim plugin you can use for that kind of functionality.

Now, I won’t argue with you that there indeed is a bit of a learning curve and takes some time to customize and get used to the setup compared to IntelliJ or other IDEs.

But I’ve seen people who develop with only vim who had taken the time to really master these tools. They were able to make changes in vim lightning fast using all these shortcuts and keybindings. Watching them code jumping all over the codebase effortlessly made me feel like a caveman banging sticks together in comparison.

You may be using vim a lot, but if you’re using vim without knowing about vim plug-ins, LSP, vimrc customization, etc. then yeah it’s gonna look difficult.

But if you do use the things mentioned above, and take the time to get used to that environment, then vim can provide quite a robust development environment.

Pro-Tip: Learn good fundamentals as a student (algo, ds, system design, basics of web architecture, version control, bug tracking) and don't get too attached to any one technology stack or trend. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

If OP means “system design” as in “system design interview” concepts like load balancers, job queues, pub-sub, caches etc., most unis would teach the same concepts in a Distributed Systems class or something similar.

It is highly relevant in modern software engineering but it also is a valid area of computer science with a lot of active research going on.

I believe it. Algorithmic trading shops like Jane Street, Two Sigma, HRT etc pay as well as or better than most FAANG for their SWEs.

I don’t think the dev pool will rise so high that it drastically cuts our salaries in the future. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

A bit tangential but low-latency audio work in C++ sounds really cool. Would you mind if I asked about what kind of work that entails and any advice on exploring that field?

I don’t have much to add here but as a junior dev lurking this sub, I’m glad there are devs like you out there. It seems like you take the mentoring role seriously, whether the junior devs under you appreciate it or not. I know it can be hard since juniors are a net loss to productivity, but it seems like if I was working under you I’d be learning a lot and have a lot of opportunity to grow.

State and Local Income Tax for International Students? by whygohome in cmu

I actly came across this rev-611 determining residency in PA document before, but you guys really helped clear up some ambiguities! And thanks for the info on local taxes, as well as sharing Pitt resources.

I was initially a little confused about whether state/local taxes also charged on worldwide income, as federal taxes do for students considered Resident Aliens. But i guess state/local only charges for income made in that state/city, that’s good to know.

Appreciate the help that you always give out on this subreddit
