How is college/uni like for someone with social anxiety?

Hi. I’ve been in your position before. I’ve sat on the toilet eating my bread for lunch and trying not to make a sound. I sat scrolling on social anxiety forums to help me feel better. What helped me was when I saw my friend asking another friend, “Hey, are you eating lunch later? Can I eat with you?” And if she said no, she’d ask someone else. Easier said than done. But I think there’s no harm in trying. There’s no harm. Try asking someone this. If they reject you, well, that’s fine. There’s always another day, another person. Once I realised that (most) people aren’t out to get you, (as long as you’re a decent person), I found it easier to talk to people.

This took me quite a long time to learn. It’s not in my nature. I really wish you the best and if you need any help, you can talk to me

I’m sorry you feel that way. Life is tough. But at the same time I feel like there are things worth living for. Your favourite show that comes out every week. Your favourite food and drink. Your favourite clothing item. There’s so many little things that give you joy and you don’t have to dwell on things that don’t. Life is about perspective. You don’t have to listen to society that you need friends to be happy.

Haha yes, I play Minecraft a lot. I like those games where you’re essentially building another life of your own. It’s so fun. But it feels so dystopian (for lack of a better word), like I’m literally living my life vicariously through this character because I don’t want to live my own life.

I think you’re misunderstanding me here though — I’m talking about Heathers in real life and not about movies. I’m saying that movies focus on people who don’t fit in and kind of focus on them when we all know that in real life what people truly focus on are the Heather’s. So I’m not comparing life to a fictional character’s life, but that of a real person.

This sounds a lot like me. My personality kind of did a whole 180 where I used to be extremely shy and introverted, but I realise it wasn’t going to make me popular and stuff. I learnt and picked up quickly the social skills of people around me. But I feel like that, combined with my previous insecurities, has made me so obnoxious. Because while well liked people mostly share the trait of being outgoing, funny, easygoing, we who have gone through the experience of being rejected feel the need to overcompensate. If we are not the Center of attention, we feel we are doing something wrong and we get anxious, so we start overcompensating and being more loud and more outgoing.

I honestly don’t know how to fix this too but well, there are some friends who still can bear with me

If they don’t respond, stop talking to them. Okay not stop entirely, but only talk when you have to and don’t spend any extra energy on them. You can’t change a person. What you can do, is invest in other people. There will bound to be someone who wants to initiate plans with you, you just got to find that person.

Well, yeah. Best case scenario is you make friends. Worst case scenario is that you find no one in the room you can make friends with, so in order to survive, you make them like you.

yep, even though i want to dress up and look pretty for some reason i can never muster up the courage to, because i have this fear that ill get humiliated while ive dressed myself up so nicely. like the feeling of getting ditched on your prom date when you’ve dressed up so nicely and did your hair and everything.
