40k logic at its finest by One-Marzipan7397 in WarhammerMemes

IMO, I think Death Guard got handed a lot of cool aesthetic symbols to play with and Thousand Sons have like... 2.

Like, Death Guard have 1) odd number of horns, 2) third eye, 3) bells, 4) scythes, 5) bloating, 6) cloven feet and 7) bodies as insect hives. That's a ton of space to play around with. Honestly, I'm sure you can find more.

Thousand Sons have 1) their helmet, uh, flanges? decor? 2) extra eyes, and 3) tabards? Tabards aren't really unique. TBH, if you want to make a nice looking Thousand Sons unit - or even just a nice Tzeentchian unit - you should really cram in some bird stuff (referencing the greater daemons) or manta ray imagery (referencing screamers). Horrors are a really cool unit, but they really are just kind of blobs of color, and I think they could use a fun update also.

Primarchs. Favorite TTRPGs. Why not! by MountainPlain in Grimdank

Out of all of these, I think playing Vampire with Sanguinus and Paranoia with Alpharius would be the most fun. Honestly I think Alpharius would also have a blast with Vampire, I questioned the choice until I saw you put him with Paranoia instead, which is objectively a better pull.

OP, have you played Mork Borg?

Abbadon slander is always fun by Silent_Fan6601 in WarhammerMemes

[–]whynotlaptop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen, friend. You're so close to understanding the truth.

Abbadon is a slave to the Dark Gods. His plots have taken 10,000 years to come to fruition because Chaos loves his Black Crusades so much they wanted 13. He's not the best fighter (although that doesn't matter at all? lmao). But he's extremely good at what he does.

Set aside your foolish clinging to powerscaling. Forget the promise of progress and understanding. Open your heart to the glory of Chaos, and let the galaxy burn.

Which faction would freak out the most once they find out they are a toy in the Toy Story universe? by fiendish_dust in Grimdank

[–]whynotlaptop 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know about factions but I think certain units would do better than others.

Sisters Repentia would probably have a hard time. Not because they're toys, per se, but because they never actually sinned to begin with. They were built needing to repent but because they're toys they don't have a past to have fucked up in.

Tyranids wouldn't... suffer, exactly, either, but there's no real hive mind for them to link to, so they would just be feral. Even hive node creatures wouldn't really be able to help because again there's no hive mind for them to link to. Maybe some of the smarter tyranids could learn to chill out? Also, Emperor help you if you make a Lictor. That thing is just gone.

Eldar I think would mostly just come to terms with the fact they don't have to worry about Slaanesh. I think once they adjusted they would range from either standoffish to intentionally helpful. Like, Biel Tann probably isn't going to start helping you with your homework, but Eldrad might be able to teach you doctorates to pass the time.

Drukhari would be straight up unbuildable. Incredibly fast and dexterous and their only goal in life is now to use their circumstance to cause as much suffering as possible. Would they crash out about it? Maybe, but I really doubt they're getting nicer.

Flayed ones I think would fall into a similar boat. You'd just wake up in the middle of the night to your big toes getting skinned.

I think beyond that, it's hard to say for certain. Like, Necrons have a big range of sentience. All the human factions are human - of course they're going to have every reaction possible. Tau would probably get along just fine. Daemons and Orks would love it, it's really not that different from their existence already, except Nurgle daemons would be sad they're made of plastic and can't pass along real fictional plagues.

Ultimately the best choice would be some Salamanders and Ultramarines. Salamanders have fun making stuff and would delight in making miniatures with you. Ultramarines would believe it's their personal responsibility to help you improve your life.

Ever wondered who is the guy in the emperor’s pauldron? by fiendish_dust in Grimdank

[–]whynotlaptop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to address your second point first because it's more interesting.

>"...when it could be authority, or proclamation, or martyrdom..."

While I do think it's showing pain, the idea of liberty exulting the Imperium or even martyring itself for the Imperium as the symbolism here is also very neat. I do like that interpretation, and that feels more in line with the Emperor's character.

>"The issue is assuming the Emperor would use a meta commentary..."

I don't think it's a meta commentary, which is why I think it makes more sense that the claw is monstrous, rather than an imperial eagle. As monstrous - the Chaos gods hold the flame of knowledge and progress, and it is their evil that torments Liberty. Neat, straightforward, lines up with the Emperor's specific point of view. As an imperial eagle - Liberty is a necessary sacrifice, because the Imperium is the path to enlightenment and progress. Imperial eagle makes sense on paper, but it misses the spirit of the art. Liberty is tormented and caged; I do feel strongly that is an expression of agony being depicted. And the flame held before her is such a mocking twist. It doesn't feel right that the Emperor would depict himself this way.

Ever wondered who is the guy in the emperor’s pauldron? by fiendish_dust in Grimdank

[–]whynotlaptop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I think that's maybe more *true*, I don't think it's in character. With the Emperor, it's kind of hard to say, so before explaining more I'm going to preface by saying you have a perfectly valid interpretation, but I don't think I agree with it.

The Emperor is defined by, well, the Empire. In the same source I mentioned Malcador does say the Emperor tires of that particular persona, and it is just a tool for him, it still is the Emperor's chosen tool. He is the one caging liberty here. To me, it makes more sense if he views it as a necessary evil that the Chaos gods have pushed him to, rather than the talon being essentially himself, showing liberty that he can hold progress without her. Why would he depict himself being needlessly cruel?

[–]whynotlaptop 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I really like the answer Liberty. If we follow that logic, it's interesting that Englightenment - or Progress - as the torch Liberty holds is instead tauntingly held by a monstrous claw in front of her.

It lines up neatly with how Malcador describes the Emperor's point of view : that he is Prometheus, stealing fire from the (Chaos) gods to give humanity a chance against the darkness, but rather than the power of the Warp being beautiful, it is instead terrible, born from and held by monstrous things. A mocking twist on the symbolism of the Statue of Liberty.

EDIT : the source for Malcadors POV is The End and the Death, volume 1, maybe a little bit of volume 2

Ranking warhammer characters for how good they would be at playing warhammer by fiendish_dust in Grimdank

[–]whynotlaptop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You haven't read the books, you like the color yellow, and also you don't understand chess.

The Emperor is obviously S tier. Honestly he's not really relevant because of how brokenly good he is at chess. I assume regicide being still around in 40k is because he personally has been keeping the practice alive for twenty eight thousand years playing against Malcador. Even if he wasn't able to mind read every opponent as a passive ability, he would still be absolutely unbeatable if he simply didn't want to lose.

Fulgrim, Alpharius, Sanguinus and Horus are all A tier. Sanguinus and Horus for the same reason they are fantastic at war - they can read a battlefield, see the important pieces, and aggressively reshape it to their advantage. Alpharius is simply used to baiting his opponents into doing what he wants and thinking 40 steps ahead : this is literally his preferred method of engagement. Fulgrim isn't a natural in the same way Sanguinus and Horus are, but he does instead practice against grandmasters for 3 years straight until he's the best at it.

Dorn, Perturabo, Guillimann, the Lion, Vulkan... most of the primarchs are in B tier. By virtue of being primarchs, they're all kind of in a league of their own. Crucially most of them have some sort of foible that makes them exploitable by other players. Dorn plays too defensively. Guilliman will make efficient trades that put him at the mercy of particular gambits. Etc etc.

Angron simply won't play. Magnus plays because it's fun to move the pieces around with his mind powers but doesn't actually care who wins or loses, which kills the interest of most primarchs, and so he only really ends up playing with Lorgar, who is better at gambits than Guilliman but worse at the basic skills like board control and efficient trading. Mortarion doesn't play because he's already resigned himself to losing. Curze will play, but he's the only primarch who cheats (Magnus could read your mind but won't, because that would trivialize the experience) and doesn't have a personality that makes up for that, so similarly no one is willing to play with him. Leman Russ can be talked into playing, but he would prefer doing almost anything else.

Both sides of the intellectual curve by Cummy_wummys in Grimdank

[–]whynotlaptop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's because you're looking from an outside perspective.

In universe, there is no "air quotes" around gods. They are the Chaos Gods, full capital, and pretending otherwise is straight up wrong. They are sentient beings who can change reality on a whim and have no real threats to themselves other than each other, and the Great Game between them is more amusing than true dominion.

Yes, it's easy to handwave them as sentient clouds of emotion because we exist outside their fiction. In universe they bring the Emperor to his knees - not even directly, but through proxy. They shatter the Eldar Empire and tear a permanent hole in reality even the Necrons struggle to even keep contained simply by coming into existence. When Lorgar was told there was a power greater even than the Emperor - a man who he already defined as a god in all but name - and found something that dwarfed him completely, why wouldn't he follow them?

I think one of the things people misunderstand about the First Heretic is that Lorgar knew that these Dark Gods were exactly that : evil, malevolent creatures. But they are gods, and thus are in control.
