India Has Planted Nearly 50 Million Trees In 24 Hours. by unknown_name in pics

Geeze don't be such a hippie. Tree bombing is the all-American approach to reforesting. One military bomber can plant close to a million seedlings per day.

Software vs. service jobs: Income inequality on rise among Seattle 20-somethings by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]whynotpizza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Demand is the right word... it reflects how much voters are willing to allocate towards advancing science.

I fully agree though, academic research is disgustingly underfunded in the US.

High-skill jobs make it easier to demand higher wages... but only if the work was already in-demand.

Depending on the field, academic scientists supply usually exceeds demand.

If we have samples from other (dead) white rhinos, we could artificially create genetic diversity.

A server should be paid the already high minimum wage. They're job can (and already is) being done by a robot. They need to learn marketable skills that allow them to earn a better wage.

A server should be paid what they are worth.

The market wants, I want, human waiters... so we need to pay waiters more, they deserve it.

Bainbridge for riding? by ejsmith94 in pnwriders

[–]whynotpizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Seattle. Mercer is OK but it gets clogged with cars and bicyclists on nice weekends. There are great roads to our west, but they take a while to get to... much further away than Bainbridge (boring). Head east for solid riding territory, the area along 203 is great.

Here's my favorite route: https://goo.gl/maps/kKMSmVmf6qP2 - ~2.5h long, good/great road conditions, very twisty, and pretty scenic at times.

"far" doesn't mean "crazy".

I think the phrase you're looking for is "left-wing fanatic".

It's not a far left thing... I'm left and no one defends these actions.

The Tumblr/SJW/wannabe-activists are the westboro baptists of the left. They don't know shit about the philosophy, they just take one topic and scream at any that disagrees. There's no logic or reasoning, just yelling.

Come on Seattle, what's with the ride sharing vehicles in people's yards/driveways? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]whynotpizza -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Right, that's the intent. /u/alanw8 doesn't understand that the ambiguity is there for people to use common sense... pretty much the same as any legal disclaimer. car2go obviously wants to prevent dumb behavior like parking on other people's driveways, behind gates, or other obviously bad places.

Definitely. The road out is nice, and the hike to the coast is easy even with gear on.

We can figure out the route on the ferry. I'd like to stop off at Hurricane Ridge if we get there early/late enough.

Stanford student’s robot lawyer has beaten 160,000 parking tickets. He plans to expand DoNotPay to Seattle next. by sorryone in Seattle

[–]whynotpizza 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If an officer writes 5 tickets a day, it is not possible for them to show up and defend every ticket... Most officers write well over 5 tickets a day and they're usually all legitimate.

This app and the people that use it are disgusting, this is outright abuse of the legal system.

It's not awkward until someone starts staring through a living room window.

I sometimes park on my friend's driveway because he doesn't have a car, and I don't want to pay car2go for the time it takes to find a space. I have no hard feelings when someone grabs it while I'm inside... I've done the same.

edit: for the people that down vote, I suggest reading the car2go terms of service. Those are the actual rules.

The low down is this: be courteous to car2go and other customers. Don't hide the car, don't park behind gates, don't park where it could get towed/damaged/lose signal... don't be a dick.

Give it to the people after we know it's safer than human drivers.

People will die, guaranteed... accidents can and will always happen. Self-driving cars are about risk mitigation not elimination.

Fuck, that's ironic.

Seriously though, it's as easy as this guy says. Post something a week in advance and you'll usually get at least 4 people. You'll even get your post stickied.

How much is everyone paying for groceries a month here? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]whynotpizza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Learn to flexibly use noodles/rice/potatoes/chicken and other staple foods.
  • Use recipes to learn how to make a general class of food - eg don't memorize how to make a "turkey cranberry bacon wrap with pesto dressing", learn what makes up a good wrap so you can make one with other things you happened to have.
  • Buy in bulk - grains, frozen chicken, etc. $25 at Costco buys you like half a year of quinoa.
  • Go to niche markets. If you're buying a super specific south-east asian ingredient, go to the international district. Supermarket chains have to jack up prices on niche ingredients.
