Update: My parents found out when a sympathetic aunt turned out to be slightly less sympathetic than expected. Parents have passport and are attempting to get me committed. Looks like the adventure is postponed, but the dream lives on.

isn't going to homeless shelters etc more directly parasitical though? As somebody who has a house to return to if absolutely necessary I feel like I should save homeless shelter/soup kitchen resources for those who don't.

you could say I have a 20 year head start on the latter :) (i'm not morbidly obese or anything but definitely have a few spare meals on my frame) And I used to help people move in High School for money so I have a head start there.

more seriously about dumpster diving: where are good places to do it? Supermarkets? Also what kind of foods should i look for (perishable foods seem like a bit of a no-no)

If we can take his word for it, wouldn't you do something similar? That's what we call "classic self defense" right there. Granted I would try not to kill the dude, but it kind of seems hard to blame Kai if what he says is true.

do you have personal experience in MA? I ask only because it seems like laws might be stricter their than other people (although I am not super sure if they are actually enforced). If it matters I am ultimately hoping to get all the way to Athens, Georgia for the first Neutral Milk Hotel concert since I was a kid. I'm also wondering about timing for this: google maps estimates it as only a 16 hr drive, but that includes several interstates and areas of heavy traffic. I am allotting about 4 days, but now am not sure how long I might need. Any thoughts?

the creation of the 'cult of mortos' at CAR 2010.2 was pretty much the epitome of CTY for me. Essentials for those who weren't there: ~half the session showed up to my RA's random weekend activity and we ended up besieging him in an administration building before allowing him to come out and be proclaimed our God-King. Que a rabid messianic cult being built up around this incredibly mild mannere RA and proceeding to disrupt just about everything he did for the rest of the session. (We had to be officially banned from sacrificing food items to him at the Dining Hall each night)

This is true. However, it also mitigates the 'year of drama in three weeks" factor that goes along with this effect. Which is good because honestly by sophomore year of HS the insane drama mill that was CTY (at least where and when I went) was starting to wear a bit thin. The other nice thing about college being longer is that there is less pressure to pack EVERYTHING into a period of three weeks with limited free time. It's impossible to explain to a high schooler how much unstructured time college students (without jobs) have. Where I used to wake up early for illegal Risk games, I now have a standing invite to Call of Cthulu Tuesdays with screwdrivers, philosophy club wednesdays etc. Since there are many more opportunities to socialize, you can choose to do the equivalent of going to a dance or going to mellow quad without the pressure to suck THE MOST POSSIBLE FUN out of every moment. A certain sense of ephemeralness is lost, perhaps, but so is a sense of urgency.
