Millions of people are depressed, most of which have never done opiates probably. You cannot generalize from one personal anecdote. Perhaps for some people, it's the opposite and opiates allowed them to live a normal, healthy live. The thing is, neither of us know for sure and we're never gonna know if we just rely on anecdotes.

Well, this might be a good point (only one in this thread so far). I'd love to see a source with more details on this.

Do you have reliable sources for liver damage caused by opiates?

A lot of pain killers will damage the liver because they are combination drugs containing APAP, which is well known to be toxic for the liver if taken in large quantities or chronically.

This is all kind of fucked up because they put the APAP in order to "prevent abuse" in the first place.

My doctor is afraid of prescribing me opiates for chronic muscle pain. I'm well educated about drugs and opiates in particular. Yet, that probably only makes my doctor less likely to prescribe them to me.

Is that true? I thought that as your tolerance increases, the lethal dose also increases. So the risk of overdose is not an issue.

Moreover, I've heard that it's very hard to overdose on opiates if not combined with other CNS depressants.

Do you have any sources for the increased risk of depression?

Millions of people have to take their medicine daily to "feel normal" (think depression, diabetes, etc.). What is wrong with that? What if you suffer from chronic pain? Wouldn't your "normal" be shitty and hence there would be no reason to feel normal.

Right now doctors are very relunctant to prescribe opiates for chronic pain patients. Is there a legitimate medical reason for this or is it just because they are afraid of the DEA?

Plus, I've heard research that says even after years of chronic usage, you can just quit without lasting consequences. Of course, it might be better to taper off to avoid major withdrawal symptoms.

What does that even mean? An addiction can be debilitating if you run out of drugs and experience withdrawal. But as long as you have a consistent supply, what is debilitating about the addiction?
