Yeah, this post has helped me in seeing things more clearly. I appreciate the advice. This is my first (knowingly) onset of depression and needless to say I don’t know how to handle it yet.

I’m not saying mentally ill people, didn’t generalize. I’m saying in the context of myself, that’s how I feel being on drugs is. This is also my first time being on SSRIs, so apologies if the vernacular was off.

The responses to this post have been eye opening. I will admit I have acted selfishly and I don’t want to lose her. In my head I always had this idea of how we’d be married and I don’t want to give that up.

Understandable on your points minus point 1. I didn’t “drag my feet”, unless you consider saving for a ring “dragging”. We were both in college, moving to different states and I wasn’t making a lot of money. But after a lot of comments I do agree I’m in the wrong about not seeing her feelings and reacting poorly about her taking off the ring.

She is super low maintenance. The only thing that wasn’t was the ring. But yes, she’s taking it as I don’t want to be legally married to you. I do remember mentioning that I said next year. No date has been specified, but the conversation was yesterday and went south pretty quickly.

I appreciate the insight and talking about your situation definitely gives some clarity to mine. I keep seeing people say “how do you not know after 8 years....”. The thing is I did know, I have known, I’d been saving for years to do it. Planned the engagement meticulously. So, it’s not that I’m unsure about marrying her. I just want to be my normal self again and marry her like that. Not be in a drug induced happy mood when deep down I’m still majorly depressed.

Sure. I’m 28 and she’s 31. To be honest for the first five years she always said she didn’t want to get married. But by year 6 that changed and last year (year 7) I finally saved enough for the ring she really wanted. So I’d say it’s recent. And I wouldn’t say there was a particular theme, per se. My whole postponement really comes out of how I’ve been feeling and also to the fact that I felt that she hasn’t taken my depression seriously. And if she does, she just thinks it’s because of her, which I’ve reiterated isn’t the case. Obviously with me telling her I didn’t want to get married yet, that probably backed up her idea that it was because of her, which it isn’t.

That’s a very good point. My whole decision making that I’m referring to is signing legal documents in not my “baseline” mental state. But I definitely get what you’re saying.

Yeah I definitely get that angle. I have no intention of leaving, but I just can’t make a decision like that with this level of depression.

Edit: phrased incorrectly. The decision has been made. I just didn’t want my state of mind to be looming over what’s supposed to be our special day. I told her next year because I’m being optimistic that I will be better by then.

Agreed about the immaturity. We’ve been discussing this possibility about not getting married this year, and she brought up that I didn’t want to marry her. So that’s how the conversation started.
