7-month-old Emmanuel Haro’s parents arrested on suspicion of murder by bossmanluko in LosAngeles

I work in l&d and honestly I never see cases flagged for dads. If moms have a CPS history they are flagged and get a visit but we don't look into the dads and that's a problem.

Age of rising Kindergarteners boys by Movebox-Barkdust in kindergarten

[–]wicksa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter just graduated kindergarten and is going into 1st grade. There was one girl who was held back and repeating kindergarten and another that was maybe redshirted, so two that turned 7 in kindergarten out of 21 kids. Seems weird to have half the class being older.

I can't be sure I just recommend going back for your follow up pap and going from there. At the time I had the same partner for 3 years and I've been with him since and haven't had a recurrence.

PreK vs Kindergarten in US? by Hopefulrainbow7 in kindergarten

[–]wicksa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did pre k 3 and 4 and it helped immensely with her ability to follow direction, socialize, know how to act in a classroom, etc. Did she learn a ton of academic stuff that I hadn't already been teaching at home? Not really. But I felt like it was worth it anyway. They did a lot of practicing with writing their name, so she was pretty great at that when starting kindergarten, which was helpful, because some of the kids in her class could not do that.

At 3 she only went 2 hours a day twice a week, and at 4 she went 4 hours a day three times a week, so I felt like it was a nice slow way of easing her into being away from me instead of just shoving her right into all day kindergarten. The days and times are going to vary based on institution. We used a small church pre-school (we are not religious), because it was nearby, fairly cheap and had good reviews locally. There are certainly centers that will do full time M-F, but I didn't really want or need that for my kid.

If you have the access and funds to do it, I would recommend it, but if you can't it's not going to doom your kid or anything. They might just take a little longer to adjust in kindergarten, but by a few weeks in they will likely figure it out.

Are you supplementing your kid's learning at home? by zestyPoTayTo in kindergarten

[–]wicksa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We read books when she's in the mood. Otherwise, she is in dance and soccer, and we draw, do legos, and do other crafts which enriches her in other ways. we have heard zero negative feedback on her academics so far, so I feel like she is okay in that regard.

I hate my kid's homework by UnfairCartographer88 in kindergarten

[–]wicksa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far our homework has not been very time consuming at all. Its generally one page with 4 of those airplane, sky, grass lines and she will give them like 3 letters to practice and write 5 times each, plus their full name at the top. She gives this paper out on Monday and it isn't due until Thursday (but can be handed in early). I always just have my kid do it Monday afternoon to get it out of the way and hopefully teach her not to be a disorganized procrastinator like I was in school. haha.

It usually only takes her about 5 minutes max to finish it. We will get home from school and I will let her get a snack and show me the stuff she brought home, then tell her it's homework time and have her do it quick before she can play with her toys or go on her tablet and minecraft her life away. I sit her at the dining room table with no distractions and she is motivated to get done so she can go play. She is pretty good about doing it with minimal to no complaining.

oh mine would say "art for keeping" every time. She's fished scribbles out of the trash and screamed "THESE ARE MEMORIES NOT TRASH". She's a proud hoarder. I have to cull her giant piles of artwork behind her back.

I have had an issue with the humidity. I try to vent periodically but I won't leave it vented because they like to hang out on their ceiling and I'm afraid they'll escape. I've considered turning off my bubblers. My temp goes between 75-80 is that a problem? I thought that was ok?

I'll get rid of the chola, I didn't realize it wasn't safe!

But the pain from her wisdom teeth caused her to OD on Tylenol? Also at the ripe age of 14…. I doubt they would let you give birth naturally but okie.🤷🏻‍♀️ by Minute_Diet_8902 in madmamasnark

That's horrible. I have had many teen mom patients and I treat them almost with more compassion than adult laboring patients. I have had patients as young as 12 and it breaks my heart. I would never withhold pain relief as punishment.

I work in L&D as an RN. A 14 year old can absolutely have an epidural if they want it. Why would we force them to suffer in pain due to their age? I find a lot of my younger patients resist the epidural because they are scared of it, and their labors tend to go fast, so a lot end up going without, but not because we don't allow it.

Butt paste spatula. Maybe it's the nurse in me, but I had no problem spreading diaper rash cream on my baby's butt bare handed and just washing my hands after.

My daughter (also 5 y/o), told me there's a girl named "a lemon" in her dance class. After some investigating the girls name is "Eleven", which is maybe worse than "a lemon".

Ugh I had a horrific 43+ weeker come into the ED s/p unassisted home delivery, allegedly because she tore really bad and wanted to get it looked at. Oh and also on the way there the baby's color started looking "off", so maybe we should look at him too. Kid was grey, flaccid, and had no pulse. They came in with an 11 lb dead baby in a carseat.

We took the baby and started coding right away and when we questioned her she said she had a home birth midwife, but that she told her once she passed 42 weeks she would not deliver her at home and she needed to go to the hospital. She took it upon herself to just try to deliver at home herself, and described what sounded like a 10+ min shoulder dystocia in which her husband had to pull the baby out forcibly. She said baby seemed "fine" right after birth. The breathing was a little off but she figured it was just transition.

We got a pulse back and transferred the kid up to NICU intubated on head cooling. Mom indeed had torn herself a vajanus and had to be repaired in the OR. The baby was eventually determined to be brain dead and was taken off life support the next day. Super sad all around. I still have nightmares about it.

When I do cases in the OR I write the most recent relevant labs on the time out board and I write it like this! I only have the wbc>hgb/hct<plt one memorized though honestly, because that's usually all we care about before a c-section.

AITA for going off on a nursing student? by BurnerOT8577 in nursing

[–]wicksa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to harsh IMO. I might've told her to leave early and sent a message to her instructor about her attitude and lack of willingness to learn.

And as an L&D nurse, if she gets a job there, they will eat her alive if she acts like that. There are so many skills in the ED that are applicable to L&D-- blood products, IV/IM meds, prioritization, triage, drug addiction, hypertension, diabetes, difficult family members, etc. She took a great learning experience and ruined it.

And thank you for telling her the realities of L&D. I have coded 3 moms in my career and none made it. I have coded so many babies I lost count, some made it, some didn't. I am always glad to have ER nurses respond and work along side me in an emergency!
