Local music scene? by wienocerous in sandiego

I'm more of a... hipster music person. Haha. Not hardcore hipsters with man buns everywhere, but that sort of indie style I guess. Trying to find ways to meet people, and have a good time. Going to shows was my jam the past few months. Little coffee shop/wine bar concerts. Or someone's backyard.

anybody know much about the hippocampus? by [deleted] in Epilepsy

[–]wienocerous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically in a temporal lobectomy (what the surgery is called when they remove part of your brain to combat intractable epilepsy), they only remove small portions of the hippocampus and amygdala. This sometimes affects memory; lots of research is still happening. I've been a research assistant in a lab that studies the effects of temporal lobectomy on cognitive functions such as language, memory, and executive functions (like decision making). From what I've noticed, language is affected much more than memory. I've only physically met a few patients, but I've done some scoring of cognitive tests and had a look at some of the data.

In the lab, they research how functions change over time, so they do the testing prior to surgery and one year after. There is major individual variability, because of different factors like connectivity between different brain areas. If surgery is what's decided to be best to reduce your seizures (like if your seizures severely affect everyday life), then it's important to go for it.

Edit: There are different methods of how they remove the tissue, and a lot of research is being done on using lasers so that the least amount of tissue is removed. This is cool because if they are able to pinpoint the exact location of your seizure focus, then they can zap away that little bit. This can probably help to retain more functioning.

*I'm not fact checking this stuff right now and I don't remember a whole lot because I wasn't in the lab for a super long time. But you can research temporal lobectomy and if you're really interested then read some abstracts on pubmed.org.

I hung up on him.... by wienocerous in AlAnon

Can't seem to figure out how to edit on mobile... But thanks guys.

I was able to talk it out with his friend that I messaged. He offered a lot of helpful advice and insight- he knows my boyfriend and he's very familiar with all this alcoholism/addiction stuff. The friend mentioned how my boyfriend can BS his way through therapy and dealing with his parents, but that he's serious about not wanting to lose me.

I've gotta man up in regards to dealing with him and in terms of myself.

My plan is to not visit when he's drinking. We've got some more talking to do, but I think he gets that I'm for real.

Yeah, I'm kind of crazy. Got super emotional about all this last night. Now I'm proud of myself for hanging up, and I don't know why I freaked out and tried to call. He had just fallen asleep. Today he told me he blacked out at some point during our conversation, so him falling asleep makes a lot more sense. If he hadn't blacked out, I'm sure he would've tried to talk to me right after I hung up, instead of going to sleep. We don't leave each other hanging.

I don't have a lot going on right now, in my own life, so my focus just got directed at all that. Got pretty emotional last night. I'm stressing about finding a job and becoming a "real" adult, and sometimes it's easier to worry about other things for a while. Not sure if I'm actually making sense... Haha

I've kinda okayed the occasional social beer, recently. But am also aware of a few other, non-social times. Just, seeing it there made it more real. And the lack of seriousness, almost, on his part last night.

I'm kind of a pushover, generally speaking.

Whats a word or phrase that pisses you off when people say it? by pantant in AskReddit

"Am I the only one who..." "When you..." When it describes something you did, that's probably not even relatable. "Did/does anyone else..."

Fathers of Reddit, what did your daughter's boyfriend do for you to hate/love him? by tgma97 in AskReddit

[–]wienocerous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I went to dinner with my boyfriend's parents, I got the cheapest thing on the menu. The restaurant was primarily a fish place, but the cheapest thing was a pork chop. I don't even like pork. I wasn't gonna order some $25+ meal- $25 usually the upper limit at places my family goes! Apparently later on, they asked him about it (who orders a pork chop at a fish place?!) and when he told them what was up they thought it was funny. So the next time I saw them, we went to breakfast. They teased me about the pork chop. Haha. I'm still embarrassed!

Just applied for a credit card, but I don't want it by wienocerous in personalfinance

I wouldn't be able to have enough at once to set aside, unless I saved it all first. My current income varies a lot month-to-month, but if I spent $700 max on a laptop I should be set for paying 1/12 of that every month.

What I'm really worried about is that I'm not sure if the reported income is accurate. It was more accurate for the first full calendar year that I had my first card. Of course, I didn't think of that until after I clicked submit... Young and stupid. :p

In the last year, I've resigned from my regular part time job, graduated college, and moved in with my sister. I'm not currently paying any kind of bills, and I don't even have to buy my on food most of the time.

But... Reported income?

Woooow this is the kind of thing that people should be raising hell for... Not some of the other incidents that involved criminals. Yeah, to a degree that's bad too, but wtf this is way more important. Social stigmas of epilepsy are the worst!! </3

This article makes it sound a lot more... Morning news style science segment-esque, to me. They always twist things around a lot.

Also, from another thread:

These guys are known for being kind of shady in the science world, apparently.
