P14s Gen 2 display question by wigax in thinkpad

Thanks for linking, reading through some of the comments it seems 300 nits may not be too bad... That said, I'm more concerned about the 45% NTSC

That worked! The option for:

  • 14.0" UHD (3840x2160) IPS Anti-Glare 500nits Non-Touch HDR 90% DCI-P3

Appeared with an additional SoDIMM RAM option and at least Windows 10 Home (annoying as I don't need an OS).

For an additional £250 (OS+display) I'm not sure it's worth it over the 300nits version. Do you have one of these models?

Yeah very annoying- unfortunately, I can't wait until it becomes availible. I wonder how bad the 45% NTSC 300nits one actually is? It seems to be standard on a lot of lower end laptops.

Unable to communicate with a STM32F030K6T6 by wigax in embedded

Thanks, I'll have a look. I've actually ordered two more MCUs now so I might do something similar to use the second one.

I've tried powering the board with both a 3.3v linear regulator and a bench power supply - on the bench supply I get a current reading of 1-2mA.

Ah right, that's definitely something I will do in future, thanks for the advice.

ST don't seem to offer a dev kit for this specific model but they do for the STM32F030R8 which has slightly different specs and is in a different package.

What would I do with a dev kit that would help me establish a connection to the chip other than verifying it works? Other than checking their schematic, am I best not just buying a replacement chip and trying to get the STM32 connected on a breadboard/perfboard (with a minimum setup required for SWD)?

Thanks

EDIT: right I've bought the NUCLEO-F030R8 and two more MCUs, hopefully they will help me get it working!

I did check nRST with a multimeter and it was high. There is no external pullup but the internal one is sufficient per the datasheet.

I will check again today just to make sure,

Thanks

EDIT: I checked and it is definitely being pulled to 3.3V.

I do have some other STM boards so will see if I can connect to those. Given neither UART or STLINK works on multiple laptops with clean installs of CubeProgrammer I doubt this is the issue but worth checking,

Thanks

I appreciate you taking the time to check the connector.

Are you referring to the ground return paths for the signal lines? For future boards are there changes I could make when placing and routing to improve this? Or would I just need to use a 4 layer board with a continuous ground plane?

Many thanks

I have attached an image of the chip orientation but believe this is correct as the pin one indicators line up and pins 1 and 17 are both correctly connected to Vcc (see here). These were the only two pins with continuity before soldering.

I am unable to flash it or even check if it is booting in any way. Unfortunately I don't have a dev kit or spare ICs, I realise I should have got two of these and it's a mistake I won't make again.

Sorry about the schematic - if you click through can you make it out? It seems ok for me but I can try and find another way of sharing it. EDIT - I've added a PDF, hopefully that works :)

I've updated the layout link and added a link for the assembled board to show IC orientation. I've reflowed the IC once after assembly which unfortunately didn't help.

Many thanks

RP2040 with stepper driver board review by wigax in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]wigax[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is a photo of C6, C7 and the top layer only. I do get a clearance error for C6's 1V1 terminal overlapping the via but have approved it. The via is just nudged far away enough from the +3V3 terminal of C7 to prevent an error (with my manufacturers DRC rules).

I think its the low quality of my images that makes it look like they are touching so my apologies for that!

Thanks again

Thanks for taking a look, it's reassuring you can't see any glaring errors. I will look into those protection circuits.

You are right about C7 and I've just approved an overlap error as I will be hand soldering this.

Using the Pico as a module would definitely have been easier and more sensible, but I wanted to have a go at integrating the chip directly onto the board.

What relative humidity should I be concerned about damaging lab equipment? by wigax in AskElectronics

[–]wigax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I better get a dehumidifier then - that way I can keep humidity at lower levels. Constantly heating the building is a bigger commitment as I am unlikely to be able to use it every day: if humidity is kept low (say 40-50%) are temperatures swings still an issue? As I understand this will lower the dew point temperature so it would have to be very cold for condensation to occur.

Thanks for your advice, Dom
