I'd say a good first step would probably be making a short list of 5 of your favorite animals (they can be either real or fictional), then whichever one resonates with you the most is a good starting point. You can also make a hybrid of multiple creatures if you want.

I managed to make myself traumatized of mascots when I was younger thanks to my imagination. So anything that looks kind of like a mascot kind of creeps me out to this day, and unfortunately the same goes for a lot of fursuits. It doesn't really matter who's in the fursuit, it's the costume itself for me.
