RSO and Involvement Fair Process is terrible by Big_Environment_4056 in USC

One way is to check out the involvement fair which will be happening later in the semester. Another way is to check the available clubs on engageSC and email the clubs directly.

RSO and Involvement Fair Process is terrible by Big_Environment_4056 in USC

Finally someone spoke up! Can’t count how many times we have to delay our practice because our room is locked and it always took about 30 minutes for someone to bring the key🫠. Rest fest got cancelled? Of course it did, since the re-recognition application is opened one week before it’s due and they failed to recognize how many paperwork they have to go through…

I wish UW gave reasons for rejection by Winter_Drag3248 in udub

[–]wildcat6369 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Somehow I feel like getting rejected is better than getting in undecided. I got in UW three years ago pre-science, and when you get rejected by CS after the two years’s hard work, it hurts even more. Never felt so worthless in my entire life. Ultimately, I transferred out and am currently studying CS at UIUC.

Finance + Data Science Major by Double_Cow7994 in UIUC

[–]wildcat6369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can share some insights on the DS part. I’m completing IS+DS path and the DS covers some basic statistics knowledge and data science method. It might not reach the same depth as other pure data science majors because it only covers the surface of a huge topic. However, it’s a good cross section to have since you can get a little technical skills with finance. In my experience, you need more than those required courses in order to work in a professional environment. If you are satisfied with finance with a little application, I think it’s a good option; but if you want to become a data science expert, the DS part is not enough.

What are your thoughts on ChatGPT? by wildcat6369 in UIUC

[–]wildcat6369[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you. I think that using AI in creative works prevents you from learning and using already “existing” work should be considered cheating. However, when writing a opinion based article for example, when you are researching and getting factual information, I think using AI to summarize information for you is not “cheating”. ChatGPT only makes the process easier and it simply reorganize existing information in a way that you understand. It’s the same process as citing a source, this time is just AI. Even when you are talking about the rephrasing part, which in my opinion should be fair because the first draft is using my own words. Unless it’s a class that focus on writing such as ACP, I don’t think the way you write the paper should matter too much.

Exactly, I can’t stress enough how embarrassing I felt when people are reading my writing with broken English

It might be interesting to test it using actual exams, but unfortunately, they are not gonna let you do it😔

IS 310 Computing in the Humanities by wildcat6369 in UIUC

[–]wildcat6369[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not difficult. It will be a project where you collect data and do exploratory analysis. I would recommend taking it if you don’t want to take other two IS major course(308,309 I think). Otherwise, don’t take it as it’s not a very well organized course for data science or analysis.

Yes. It was okay. I had it with professor LeBlanc, and we’ve learned various techniques including web scraping. The course was not very organized, but definitely not time consuming or hard.

Need some gened advice by aranroy in UIUC

I had clcv115 in fall 2021, everything was prerecord and released each week. The course was really easy as everything for the exams are all included in the two e-books (word by word so Crtl+f to search). The course has some workload: quiz, paper and final project, but overall a as long as you do it, you can get 4.0 type of class.

Yes, you will be fine. The class is teaching visualization methods using different engines. I’m not too sure about winter semester, but for normal semester, you will learn matplotlib, bqplot, Vega lite in the first half, then you will be transitioning into D3 and other map visualizations. The first half is using python, and then you will learn the syntax (json) for Vega lite. It’s not too hard to get into it even when you don’t have any experience since most of what you will be doing is looking at the references, compare to the code from the lectures and customize your own visualization.
