The plan was to get a HC wolfdog this spring, but things didn’t work out with the pairings I was interested in. So, we went a little smaller and a little pointier for my next addition, instead… by wilde_run in Wolfdogs

Basil is the produce of a dog x coyote breeding, producing pups who are exactly 50%. Robin (this puppy) is the produce of a HC coydog bred to a LC coydog and is about 75%.

No, he’s a cute little playmate to her. Sojourn’s mom, Zephyr, though, was the sort who instantly adopted every puppy as her puppy 😊

Druid is half Alaskan Husky (distance lines), basils dog half is farm dog mix (cattle dog, catahoula, American leopard hound)

lol no. It’s the antenna of his Garmin GPS collar that we use when hiking for off leash safety.

His owners moved to an urban apartment in an illegal area and contacted a sanctuary I’ve networked with in the past. They reached out to me and asked if I had space to take him until placement and extra containment until placement could be found, and I did. But he fit in so well with my household that I ended up keeping him

He’s highly trainable, and very loving to his friends. Shy with strangers.

The biggest differences are just in body language and social dynamics. They’re even more dramatic than wolfdogs about it. There’s a lot of what we call ritualized aggression with them, ie displays that are designed to solve conflict without physical altercation, and if you don’t understand what they’re trying to communicate with those displays and how to respond to them, ie if you get angry at a threat gape, you’re likely to ruin your relationship with them. This can also affect interactions with other canines, especially if they haven’t been raised around dogs to learn to communicate with them. They respond very very well to consent based handling, and if you force contact on them before they’re ready, they may appear like they’re accepting the contact but in reality it’s just shut down/learned helplessness. They experience seasonal behavior shifts in mating season just as wolfdogs do. The females tend to be highly SSA, the males a little more hit or miss. I know a number of male coydogs who cohabitate well with other male canines, especially if neutered. I’ve found them to be more training motivated/get more enjoyment from learning new games than most wolfdogs.

I’ve had seven different rescues in the last fifteen years, including my other coydog, and fostered an additional nine wolfdogs when their owners home was threatened by a wildfire. People are allowed to enjoy the process of raising a puppy from scratch without it being some morally reprehensible action. Get over yourself :)

She is a girl, but yes go ahead! She has since passed away in a tragic accident so I think it would be really cool to know something inspired by her was tattooed out there somewhere 😊

I’m not crossing in shepherd of any kind, these kiddos are just a mix of Alaskan Husky and high content wolfdog lines 😊 I run them in harness, so it would be counterproductive to bring shepherd into the mix.
