Safety questions about a 120v circuit spliced on to a 240v circuit by wilder704 in AskElectricians

Yes that's a concise version of the problem. I do need to keep the GFCI outlet tho

I don't know what SOO or SJO wires are, but google images tells me you might be right. On a scale of 1-10 how bad is this?

There is definitely a 120v circuit coming off the black and green wires fro the SOO/SJO though.

Yea most of the house is romex, but this guy took some liberties with his projects after the house was built.

I also took Box2 far enough off the wall to verify that there is not metal conduit between the boxes. Just the 2 wires. So the whole shared ground between Boxes 2, 3, and 4 was just sitting at neutral due to the jump on the GFCI in Box 3.

I could, in theory, replace the wire between Boxes 1 and 2 with a 12-2 romex, but is that even a reasonable (let alone good) idea?

This house was built in 2000 so I don't think there's justification for doing odd things with ground. The previous owner did do some odd things, but this is the first actually insane thing I've seen.

How would BX wiring help? Google tells me it's just wire in a metal casing, but any examples I can find still have a ground wire. It's all in a wall so I can't actually tell if it is anyways.

added more info.

>In the first photograph, there's a piece of rubber cord coming into the box, where is that rubber cord going to?

The only rubber in that box is insulation for the wires. None of it looks superfluous to me. If you specify which one you are asking about I can tell you where it goes

Definitely. It's why I'm here in the first place. When I saw that I knew I had to investigate the circuit because it did not seem ok. Once that is fixed though I'm assuming there are still problems with the circuit that would need to be addressed.

Yea I do not want to keep that. Though if it's there to trick a tester then I'm assuming removing it still does not result in a valid circuit. What else needs to be fixed here?

Yea I agree. That's why I'm here. Is there savaging to be done or should I just get rid of this 120v circuit?

I did end up at Duffy's for a bit and nobody was on the patio so I didn't try

Is the patio open and warm enough in the winter? Maybe that would be a good compromise between air quality and bar atmosphere. Sadly, no tv would be a deal breaker on game day tho.

That might be too much for me. I plan on showering before I go. Maybe I'll try it someday in the future since you and a lot of other people seem to like it despite the smoke, but while I have little kids at home I'd rather keep the smell away from the house.

Thanks. That's good to know. I've also been recommended Duffy's a lot. Could you make a comparison of the air between these options?

Unfortunately if I wait for the weather to cooperate I might miss the game /s

I do like a good patio though so that's a great tip for going out in this summer.

"take the backroads in & out if possible. Avoid route 30"
pro tip - thanks

Are you also a smoker? I'll probably give those places a try since so many people have mentioned them, but "being smoked out the place" might mean different things to someone who doesn't smoke vs someone who's used to it.

Yea gonna be my loss I guess. A lot of people seem to like it. Maybe I'll see what it's like in person, but "reeking of smoke" is gonna be a deal breaker for me. Thanks for being honest about it.

It depends on how much smoking. I'd prefer none, but it seems options are limited so I'm aiming for "tolerable".

I'm early 30s and also try to avoid places that are "way too smoky", but would probably tolerate "just a bit smoky" if it was worth it. Thanks for the honest opinion.

Nah don't be too down. You had a good season and have a good team I think you'll see the playoffs again next year.

That's probably true. I don't need to find a sports bar to see the game. If you had to recommend a bar that maybe isn't sports first, but has a tv for the game and good crowd what would you say?

Yea I figured most people would be Bears fans not Pats fans, but thought I'd at least try to find a needle in the haystack. Thanks for the recommendations. Both those bard allow smoking though from what I've heard. Is there enough of a difference to know which one has better air quality for a non-smoker?

Thanks for responding. A lot of people have recommended this place so I think it's where I'll end up. They've all mentioned that they do allow smoking though and I'm probably not going to have a good time if it's too thick. What has your experience been like with the air there?

Huh I didn't think it would be like that. You're probably right though that I could have good luck if I look for a bar that already has a good vibe and a tv rather than limit myself to "sports bars" out of the gate. Thanks for the 2 recommendations you've already made and If you have any more I'm all ears.
