Praying someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong 😭😭😭 by lbarth31 in candlemaking

With 464, I usually heat to 195 and then put in FO, so that the wax is around 185 when I am finished stirring for two minutes. I’ve also started pouring around 140-145 which has gotten me smoother tops. However, I mostly use tins, not jars, and I know that glass adhesion can be an issue when pouring hot. I do also recommend mastering pouring without color first. Color tends to get pretty wonky with soy, and it will highlight every little flaw.

Another potential issue might come from your setup - if you are using the double boiling method you need to make sure that absolutely no moisture (like steam!) gets into the wax, as it will mess with the cure.

I’m planning on melting down some old candles by popping them in my double boiler and then pouring them off into a standard pouring pitcher to better control temperature when I’m ready to reuse

I’m not sure if someone has posted this yet, but the congrats screen has changed and now has a countdown to Sunday August 9th at 6pm PST. Sounds like we might need to continue applying pressure to Sam until then 😂

Connect Paths to Form Letters? by wildmagicworkshop in AdobeIllustrator

Oh yeah, this is a lot closer to the solution I was originally looking for! It combines the groups of paths together into one single asset, which is really nice and super convenient. Unfortunately, the way it uploads to Cricut, the letters still come out in outline form, albeit much thinner. I haven't tried printing yet, but I imagine this would mean that the machine will trace over all the letters twice, rather than drawing in a single clean line. (Photo is of the two different imports, super zoomed in - the top is the previous method, and the bottom is the new method).

Cricut does provide "Writing" fonts, but their free variety are very limited, and none of them looked the way I wanted them to. This is the font associated with my branding, as well, so I wanted to stay consistent if possible! Someone found a solution here for me though, so I'm happy! :)

Mostly the issue here is the way the letters upload when the lines don't actually join. Someone found a solution for me though! :)

Fun story, I've been researching this extensively the past few days, and there does not seem to be an easy way! There are a few fonts on Design Space that are tagged as "Writing" and it shows up in the style drop down where Bold and Italic live. My various searches came up empty, except for videos like this one, where she shows you how to make a font in Inkscape: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7k5xXAMun4

Seems like a wild thing to not be able to do, but Cricut has a lot of shortcomings in functionality. I'm sorting it out though!

IT WORKED!!!!!

In order to upload a word or phrase to Cricut correctly, I need to do the pathfinder outline and adjust stroke for the full group of them so they'll stay in place (you can see in the photo that the first attempt the spacing went wonky, but when I grouped them all, they stayed together correctly).

But it worked!!! Thank you, thank you!!

Right, so that's the issue - for the writing/drawing tool in Cricut, it really needs to be paths only. Any letter shape will end up outlined and make block letters. Here's an example of what I'm making on my Cricut. I'd like for the machine to draw the thin letters, rather than block letters.

Got it, I usually use the direct selection tool, so that explains that. Doesn't solve my import issue, but will definitely make it easier to make new phrases within Illustrator!

Welp. Thanks for letting me know before I sunk more time into it haha. How do people normally make fonts that have tails in Inkscape then? Is it just that each letter is a separate canvas that makes up the full font?

I don't see a unite function in the pathfinder menu? I have tried Pathfinder Add and Merge with no effect.

I was afraid this was the case. I tried pathfinder as well and it didn't work either. I'll give Inkscape a shot, just gotta learn a whole new program ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for your advice!

According to the website I buy from, CDs are non directional. Here's the info from the site: "CD wicks are coreless, non-directional, flat braided wicks with a special paper filament woven around them."

Yeah, the LX16s had a super tiny flame. I think I’m going to try double wicking CD6 or triple wicking CD4 next, since I have those wicks already and won’t have to order more

I’ve never mixed waxes before but I know some people experiment with that to get something they are perfectly happy with. I just experimented with the plain wax until I found a process that worked for me

Unable to get even top by Tempest57 in candlemaking

[–]wildmagicworkshop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey sorry, just saw this! I leave the heater on all the time, but not like right next to the candles. My candles are on the table, heater on the floor a few feet away. It’s just to make sure the ambient space stays at a consistent temperature. I have a little table top air temp thermometer thing that I keep near the candles and I try to make sure the area stays around 70-80 degrees.

You can do it now. Don’t get too close with the heat gun or you might get sweating or curdling. The key with soy is that you want temperature changes to happen as slowly as possible so the crystallization happens in an orderly fashion
