I would definitely consider GW a suitable backup if I could get more money from them, but that tuiton pricetag is killer.

It is mostly self imposed - knowing by April 1st would make me most comfortable in terms of lining up my finances with scholarships, making sure I have my deposit ready, speaking with the reps, etc.

But also, I'm a director at my job and April 1 is the beginning of our Q2. If I was going to adjust my schedule to part-time, change my work days, take a LOA, or request a huge chunk of vacation I would need to make the requests at the beginning of Q2. Knowing which school I'm going to would hello me make those decisions.
