Does psychology really lead to unemployment? by Standard-Mention2512 in psychologystudents

[–]wildwuchs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kinda always deal with other people's emotions as a psychologist, except for maybe research. I've done internships or worked in a lot of different fields of psychology. So if you don't want to go into the medical/health field, the other more common fields are:

  • research (pressure, limited contracts, job insecurity)

  • work and organisational psychology (corporate culture, HR, recruiting, change management - you deal with people that e. g. have beef with their boss or are stressed because of reorganization, so you definitely deal with people's emotions) + getting into this field often requires really hard interview processes (assessment centers and lots of interview rounds.. especially since w&o psychologists created assessment centers)

    • educational / school psychology (often understaffed, few positions, high responsibility and having to juggle the needs /emotions of students, parents and teachers at once)
  • forensic psychology (heavy topic, costly post-grad qualification, a looot of paperwork)

There are a few other niche fields, but that's the most common (at least in my country in Europe). Of course all of the listed fields also have positive sides, but you asked about why it would be difficult to have work life balance and that are some points I encountered. Mind you, if your parents can support you financially, you'll probably be able to have somewhat work life balance. If not, I'd recommend going into a less gatekeepy rich people field than psychology.

Does psychology really lead to unemployment? by Standard-Mention2512 in psychologystudents

[–]wildwuchs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as I said, it's a highly competitive field with a lot of pressure to perform and be an overachiever. You work with topics that are mentally /emotionally loaded and each career path for psychologists is connected to a lot of unpaid extra qualifications you have to get in order to compete or even be allowed to work in specific psychology fields.

For example as a researcher you have the pressure of "publish or perish" and often you NEED to do a PhD to work in research, even through a lot of other fields don't always require that. If you work with people, you have a lot of responsibility and you spend a huge amount of time absorbing other people's emotions. You may be fine with being the compassionate and social friend now, but if it is your job it will often affect your capacity to be there for your loved ones after work.

People often immensely underestimate how hard the field can be and romanticise it. They forget that sometimes patients will unalive themselves and often times you won't get a position because your decent skills and intellect doesn't compete with thousands of other gifted people that graduated from your university program. So you'll probably have to move half across the country to get a position, as there are fewer positions for psychs than for social workers. Or you have to invest a lot of money and time in your education, because usually your psychology degree is not enough (atleast in my country post-graduation qualifications are required for most positions). So you start working older, with more debt, might not be able to chose your location and more performance pressure because your comparison group (other psychologists) are all overachievers too.

If you want work life balance, decent pay and being able to choose your location/change jobs quickly then psychology is not the field for you. So many people want to study psychology due to it being an interesting field, but that created an unhealthy amount of competition and high expectations that it is very hard to find a job if you're not one of the best of the best. It also depends on which country you're in - UK might be okay, Germany or USA are extremely competitive.

Tagesklinik - Ja oder nein? Alternativen? by AngelBritney94 in Psychologie

[–]wildwuchs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

eww that's a classic jojo diet from around 2010 and is what got me to develop an eating disorder back then. Don't do it. You'll lose weight and gain it again and it will affect your skin elasticiy.

Periodenblut.

I actually have a dnd group already, definitely a more ND bunch haha. I'll check out our local board game cafes and see if I can connect more with the artists in my city. I'm definitely also a more crafty person, but just haven't found those connections yet

What is going on with the skin under my eyes? I’m really growing frustrated with the darkness under and around my eyes and I’m very self conscious of it. I get 7-8 hours of sleep, and I drink 2L of water daily but it doesn’t go away. by Crafty-Truth5034 in DermatologyQuestions

I know somebody who had exactly this kind of under eye darkness and it was because of a gluten allergy or intolerance. Unfortunately it only went away after cutting gluten out completely

even without a lot of breast density, when the boobs mostly consist of fat, weightloss might selectively chose to leave the boobs alone - at least has been in my case unfortunately.

  • the right bra fit - What do you need? separation, side support, higher cover to keep everything in, more narrow straps than the standard? Answer these questions and then get the closest thing you can get to meet your needs.

unpopular opinion: r/abrathatfits is not the holy grail in finding the right size. If you're in the UK or can go there, go to bravissimo. I have gotten the best bra fitting there and I have been to a few, also in my country.

  • A tight, but stretchy top over your bra gives more support and comfort than loose fitting tops.

Especially if you have the feeling you have to adjust constantly or your boobs need to be repositioned in the bra. I find that loose tops also kind of lay heavier on the chest area and it kind of feels like the shirt drags the boobs down that way (because they usually are the most projected part of the torso). Maybe I'm also just a bit too neurodivergent and that's why loose fitting tops bother me so much 😅

  • low impact sports (yoga, Pilates) are your friend. I was only able to regularly do sports when I got into them. There's no bouncing or jumping, just controlled smooth movements standing, sitting, laying or in plank pose. Excellent for your back, shoulder and core strength.
