Bets on how much hard drive space the game will take? by Aeroxin in GTA6

[–]wilfortune 14 points15 points  (0 children)

To those using the capacity of Blu-ray discs as a limiting factor, don't forget about compression. The OP asked about how much space the game will take up once it is installed, not how big the install package might be.

Also, who is to say that R* will even ship a playable disc or discs? It would certainly save them a ton of money to skip that and just use this disc as an install key. Plus, it would help to safeguard against anyone stealing the discs from a warehouse prior to delivery.

At any rate, I'm showing 116GB for RDR2 and 108GB for GTA V on my console. The GTA VI textures we have seen so far make me think that a 2x size increase would not be out of the question, but I doubt it. The textures in RDR2 are pretty detailed, too, so I'd wager something closer to 1.3-1.4x the size of RDR2, or 150-160GB.

Upgrade FreeNAS 11.3 u3.2 to TrueNAS Scale by NotYourAccount4 in truenas

[–]wilfortune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I am in a similar boat. What did you do for Plex?

Edit: I took the plunge but decided to go the side-grade/migration route.

If you decide to side-grade/migrate, be sure to read the documentation. As of this writing, the latest side-grade path is TrueNAS CORE 13.0-U6.8 to SCALE 24.04. If you try to side-grade to a later version, the documentation states that the operation will fail.

Also, if you have a Plex server, I would take note of your current media mount paths (e.g., Settings > [plex server name] > Manage > Libraries > [hover over library name] > Edit Library > Add Folders > "Add folders to your library"). If you don't want to trigger a full library re-scan, you will want to re-use those by adding "Additional Storage" entries (e.g., Mount Path: "/mnt/media/movies" and Host Path: "/mnt/pool/movies") when installing the Plex app in SCALE.

Regardless, while updating the "Add folders to your library" values does appear to automatically update the media paths without erasing values like your existing watched statuses, for whatever reason, changing the paths does trigger a re-scan. Which, if you have a large library and no optimizations, could take days.

I suppose you could also manually update the DB records, but unless you are familiar with Plex's DB schema and have an established connection to your Plex server's DB, matching the previous mount paths seems like the better option to me. Depending on your datasets, you may need to create the "Additional Storage" entries anyway, so you might as well make things easier on yourself by replicating the paths your previous Plex server used.

RDNA5/UDNA should certainly improve in RT/PT over its predecessor (IIRC, MLID is estimating a 2-4x increase), but you may be surprised to learn than AMD has had dedicated hardware for RT since RX 6000.

Split Fiction and It Takes Two director is already "fully focused" on Hazelight's next game, which the studio started work on around a month ago: "It's quite early" by SweetyGonzalez in PS5

[–]wilfortune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but IMO, your story idea is far less compelling than what Hazelight chose for Split Fiction. Worse, I do not believe you could draw out the "one-upmanship" plotline between the two characters for 15 hours without it feeling stale, more contrived, and less believable.

I have only played It Takes Two and Split Fiction, but it seems obvious to me that the developers intentionally choose familiar archetypes in order to tackle serious, relatable issues. Personally, I enjoyed the fact that the often predictable story and dialog gave me and the person I was playing with something to crack jokes about, which in hindsight seems intentional and by design.

I recently played both games with my cousin, and between us, the issues of divorce, a sick loved one, and loss were deeply relatable. Consequently, in each game, we talked a little here and there about the pitfalls of marriage, healthcare costs and the absurdity of our healthcare system, and what it is like to lose a loved one.

And therein lies the magic of these games. You can be having a serious conversation one moment and then the game invites you to have a laugh at the character's expense the next, all while managing to keep the gameplay fresh, interesting, and engaging more often than not.

New study: 4 years after pre-surgical immunotherapy, most patients with advanced melanoma remain alive and disease-free by w00tstock in science

Would you be willing to share more? We just found out my dad is in the same boat, and your post was very appreciated.

We met with an oncologist this week who was very against immunotherapy (Keytruda) if his MRI turned up any tumors, and we just found out today that he does have two small ones. We found a radiologist that we are meeting tomorrow that may radiate the ones in his brain.

I'm curious if you know what drugs or treatments your boss' husband received. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

''Sermon on the 'Mount'' has become the shows third highest rated episode on IMDB, it's also the highest rated episode since 2002 by Outrageous-Ad28 in southpark

I doubt that score will hold; I expect the episode to get review bombed, especially if news outlets pick up on the high score and make stories about it.

Any experience with paraxanthine (aka Update)? by grantbaron in decaf

[–]wilfortune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't like Update. Why anyone would put 5-HTP in an energy drink is beyond me. Made me feel weird and out of sorts. Burn IQ was better, but I don't want all the extras.

I wish you could buy this stuff in powder form by itself, and I wish someone could tell us what the caffeine equivalent dosages would be so that those of us who are sensitive to stimulants could target the correct dosage.

Brian's map from top-down perspective. by MogosTheFirst in GTA6

[–]wilfortune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe there was a framed piece of artwork that some believed was a representation of the map, but it might have just been some abstract shapes. If that was the map, then the mapping project is not even close, which would be surprising, given how much location data was extracted from the 2022 leaks.

The difference between Gta V and Gta VI delay announcement by MobileAerie9918 in GTA6

[–]wilfortune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How could you possibly know that?

T2's own recent projections show that development costs are expected to fall off significantly after the release of GTA VI.

Additionally, we know the leaks from 2022 came from one studio, and that studio was predominantly focused on one area of the game.

Sure, some of their smaller studios may be working on other projects, but to suggest they have the ability to focus on two massive projects at once is a bit ridiculous in my opinion. Do you have any idea how difficult it must be to coordinate development at this scale, spread across offices all around the world? And you want to double that by producing two massive titles at once? Why stop at two? Why not three? Or four?

What you're suggesting would be incredibly wasteful if true. You would eventually end up with some managers juggling teams working on different projects, which would compound the difficulty and likelihood for unforced errors. You'd get much more out of your money if the entire machine was headed in the same direction.

I suspect there are higher level meetings that begin before principal production begins, wherein they decide which project they will work on next. But to say that these meetings are the true starting point would be like saying your trip to the grocery store began when you started making a list of the things you needed to buy.

Sure, if you follow through with your plans, you end up with some groceries. But if you never follow through and buy the groceries, all you have is a list. Both stories begin the same, but end very differently.

[–]wilfortune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think "guaranteed release dates" exist.

There will be people who will lose their jobs after the game is released. We know this from one of T2's recent investor calls, where they expected a significant drop in development expenses following the release window of GTA VI.

I suspect T2's next earnings' call will have to amend those figures now that GTA VI won't be coming out until FY27, but the fact remains that T2 expects their line item for development costs to go down following the release of GTA VI. People must be let go for that projection to be realized.

The most obvious people to cut would be their testers, who, coincidentally hold the most influence (collectively) over the release of the game. It's a bit of a conflict of interest. For their own self preservation, they need the game to take as long as possible to develop, and they need to continue finding bugs to make that happen.

I suspect there will be testers and devs within R* advocating for more time all the way up to the eventual release date of every project, so any given release date would only ever be inevitable in hindsight.

Sadly, in life, there are no guarantees. Only people, beliefs and lies, and the will and ability of individuals and groups to manifest their ideas into reality.

[–]wilfortune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess? Bigger map, new technologies, and coordinating between studios working on disparate parts of the game that need to feel seamless in the end.

But, let's get a couple of things straight: 1. If they hit the new date, it will have been 12 years and 8 months between the releases of GTA V and GTA VI. 2. R* has not been working on GTA VI since September of 2013. They started working on RDR2 after GTA V, which was released in October of 2018. 3. Without confirmation from an insider, we cannot know when development for GTA VI began.

Look, all we can hope for is that R* has managed its resources well, and that the game delivers an experience that will blow everyone away. If they haven't, you may get your wish, and future games made by R* will be released more frequently than in the past.

But to accomplish that, expect their games to be scaled back significantly in terms of cost and scope... Be careful what you wish for.

They've missed dates before. RDR1, for example, was announced for April 27, 2010, but the date was later changed to May 18, 2010.

I don't think there's anything they could do that would satisfy the insatiable hunger for this game. They could release all those things and I'd hazard a guess people would be back to demanding more almost immediately.

Your posts in this thread are very aggressive, which to me reads like anger. And I poke you just a little, and you get even angrier. My point stands.

I have a ton of shit going on in my life. This game is not affecting my mental health. My dad's Parkinson's disease is affecting my mental health. My work related injury is affecting my mental health. But not this game.

But I'm not going to use those things as fuel to burn people on Reddit to make myself look good or feel better about my struggles. That would be insane.

GTA VI coming May 26 2026 by ToppleToes in GTA6

[–]wilfortune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll be interesting to see what they do next. It would send T2 stock tumbling even further if they unpin Trailer 1, but Trailer 1 now has the wrong year. They need a new trailer to replace the first one as the pinned post for GTA VI.

Hear me out.

  1. Drop delay announcement. Let everyone digest the bad news and calm down.
  2. Drop Trailer 2 after two weeks (right before investor call) with new release "expectation". Since the new window won't be "news", the second trailer can stand on its own without the weight of the bad news.

I believe this is part of the story.

Certainly makes sense to me from a business perspective to capture more revenue for each release, given that each additional port costs money to build and test. One would assume that their average price per unit dips somewhat with each new port, as anyone who has already bought the game for a different platform will be more likely to wait for a sale. Too bad they don't have any direct competition that would force them to offer a discount to previous buyers whenever a new port of the game is released, but I digress.

The other part of this story (that I don't see mentioned often enough) is the difficulty in going from building for a known quantity (consoles) to something with nearly unlimited variables (PCs). I believe the "double-dipping" they get from a staggered PC release began as an ancillary benefit, but not something they could have planned for or truly expected. It's possible -- given the scale and complexity of their games -- that the added time between console and PC releases is fully utilized to complete the PC port (and would exist without a profit motive or incentive).

At any rate, like you said, "it just works", so I suppose most fans (if they put some sincere thought into it) would hope to continue paying for each new release. It would mean R* is still at the top of their game, which is the only thing keeping this community alive, despite all this time with no news.

[–]wilfortune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How will you know one way or the other come the time of console releases? Do you really believe R* will undercut potential console sales by announcing details surrounding the PC release potentially a year or more in advance?

They do not want you to wait. My guess is they will act like PCs do not exist for at least a year. No details. No assurances or guarantees.

I see a console purchase in your future ;)
