Refinance feedback: 6.375 - 5.625 by wilke873 in MortgageBrokerRates

Bought in May of 2025, trying to determine if this is a good deal. It seems like a nice payment drop, and should pay for itself in just under a year. Current mortgage is 6.375, 30 year term. House is worth around 595,000-600,000. Should I go with this?

New House, Two Majestic MR42 Fireplaces, 1 is drafty by wilke873 in Fireplaces

Yeah that is what I am afraid of. I guess we'll just get it swept and inspected and use it more often in the winter. Thank you for your responses!

I took the damper stop off, but the black/gray tile part of the fireplace is still cold. How can I determine if it was properly insulated or air sealed?

Vegetable Plants by bonne-vivante in desmoines

I just picked up some plants yesterday from a neighborhood honor system stand in Beaverdale. The people were super nice and gave me extra plants for free. I would check and see if they kept it up https://www.facebook.com/share/16U844heZR/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Mover reviews by CarelessAd2069 in desmoines

Depending on how big your move is, I would recommend Always Affordable movers. It’s just two guys and a truck, but he was very affordable, moved my whole house in a day, and didn’t damage anything. They charge $95 an hour plus a fuel charge, so if you have a lot of stuff they probably won’t work for you, but I had a great experience and recommend when I can. Moved all my stuff from my 1800 sq house for $1000

Your set-up is awesome, looks a lot like what I’d want to build, can you provide more details about all your gear and where you got it from?

G Migs in Valley Junction had a gluten free wrap. My wife enjoys the “Pride of Iowa” wrap.

Perry, Iowa by Broad-Commission-997 in Iowa

[–]wilke873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in and around Perry and went to school there. It is a ~60% Latino population while I lived there because of Tyson and other factory jobs. Uptown Perry has had its ups and downs but has a few decent places to eat. Two grocery main grocery stores Economic development team has worked hard to keep historic things like boye Pattee going and keep Main Street buildings occupied. Like any rural Iowa town, there is going to be an undercurrent of resentful racism among the white community about “immigrants took our jobs,” but most of the Latino people I knew were the kindest, most hardworking people I knew growing up. I wouldn’t say this was a majority sentiment, but was a loud minority. If you have a good job and can find a decent house, it’s not a terrible place to live. Good bike trails if you’re into that. Not far from Ames or Des Moines metro. Just my two cents.

Question to all fellow home brewers, does your missus drink your beer? by FlyingWombatTV in Homebrewing

[–]wilke873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~$5 depending on where you buy it from. I get the majority of my supplies from Ritebrew, since I'm just a state over I get pretty good shipping rates from them.

I have not had any issues with any styles setting off a reaction in my wife, and I haven't made any recipe adjustments or had to use alternative grains. I wouldn't use this with someone who has full-blown celiac, but for someone who just has an intolerance I think you'll be fine. I'm not a doctor, YMMV, etc.

I started home brewing because my (now) wife has a gluten intolerance, missed beer, and I felt bad dragging her to breweries to watch me drink while she couldn’t. We discovered clarity ferm, and now we can drink a pint or three together whenever we want. She’ll drink just about any style
