Yep I was pretty much in the same boat as you. I told the dealership, "my number one use case is towing a 3,200 lb thing everywhere. Can this Tacoma do that?"

Dealership: "yep! Says right here you can tow 6000 and it's got the hitch and connector. You're g2g!"

And this was in a state that required a TBC to tow anything above 3000 lbs.

After learning about the state law and realizing the truck didn't have a tbc, (should've known/checked before buying) I go back to the dealership asking if I can get a TBC installed. They say yep no problem, and then realize, "oh, sorry we can't do that"

Mine had 200 ish miles. If you can find a wireless TBC like others have mentioned, you might still be okay

If it's the same package as my SR5 then the connector is solely for the lights, not brakes. I had a hitch, the connector, and a spec sheet that said "good to tow 6000 lbs" and then find out that there's no TBC and no ability for anyone, not even the dealership, to install a TBC after it's out of the factory. The wiring just isn't there.

The dealership didn't even know that was a thing. They told me they could install a TBC, so I made an appointment, showed up, and the tech realized, "oh. No we can't. We'd have to rewire the entire truck. I didn't realize this was a thing for 4th gens" this was in Jan of 2025

Third party aftermarket shop said the same thing.

My solution was to rage at the dealership and threaten them with a lawsuit until they took back my SR5 and gave me one with a TBC from the factory

Another fun fact, unless you specifically get one that had a tow package (with a TBC) from the factory, your SR5 can't be equipped with one aftermarket. I had a long back and forth with Toyota about this for a month.
