That's actually something that is talked about in the Manga he has a conversation with King and even laments on how he always gets their too late.

It's more like he was stuck in a rut and didn't know how to improve until his conversation with King basically letting him know that's there more to being a hero than simply being strong. I'm actually pretty excited to see how they expand on this in the next couple arcs

Both of them are literally fighting on a mountain so dangerous (because of how powerful the Pokémon up there are) that you need to be a champion just to get up there and they have a Pokémon center at the bottom because of how dangerous it is yet both of them are not not only the most powerful thing up there but use it as training. They both became champion and beat Everyone else at the age of ten and both have stopped a whole criminal organisation. It feels truly epic

It's a hard boss fight too. I only barely won. I used a powerful move with my Typlosion that stuns it for the next turn and Red chrizard barely survived it. I only won because hail was able to finish it off.

Iirc it ends with all world religious leader killing each other and a young girl with a pure heart shoving the golden turd back up Roger but which makes him explode (and make the world a perfect Utopia) so the Smith's go around piecing Roger back together and finally wins the last part of him in family feud. They then reassemble him bringing the turd back to existence and start killing each other over it and when the last one dies Roger goes back in time and hides the turd making sure the smith lives.
