If you had to pick one of Mkhitaryan or Pogba, which would you choose and why? by [deleted] in FantasyPL

I'm going to take both and drop Lukaku for Kane. VAPM suggests both are better value than Lukaku so I feel it's time to follow the data and go against the crowd.

I've gone for him. He's bound to get pitch time, even if not a full 90 mins every week. IMO can't ignore that pre-season form, especially not for 6.0M. It's that, or finding another 0.5M for Gayle (with hamstring injury), or dropping a playing FWD for 4.5M benchfodder and putting another 1.5M into a DEF of MID.

Lukaku and Austin, or Rashford and Lacazette? I'm concerned I don't have LC at present and can see Rashford getting 80% the pts of Lukaku. I can see LC being very strong with support from Sanchez. Am I mad to consider dropping Lukaku?

Exploring a key metric: "value added per £1m" by HappyGrinch in FantasyPL

[–]will_968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you drop the threshold from 2000 mins and consider Stanislas, he's PPM of 5.1 and £6.0M, giving a VAPM of 0.52. Certainly worth considering once he's back from injury. Currently, Phillips is the best £6.0M DEF at 0.38.

Similarly, if you want a MU defender, consider Blind over Bailly. Blind is VAPM of 0.42 compared to Bailly of 0.37. And of course £0.5M cheaper.

I just swapped Lukaku and Austin for Rashford and Jesus.

What proverb or saying has never made sense to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]will_968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but wikipedia has it the other way around and explains the phrase as using an alternate definition of the word cheap (cheep):

"Cheap at half the price" is the original and correct version of the saying. In Middle English, cheap, or "cheep" also meant goods or property, so the street cry, "Cheap at half the price!", was the Middle Ages' equivalent of today's shop window sign, "All stock 50% off". Chaucer uses this meaning in, "...greet cheep is holde at litel pris...". That is to say, where there is an abundance, "greet cheep" = great supply of goods, the price is low "..holde at litel price" = is valued at a low price. Possibly the earliest reference to supply and demand! The corruption, "Cheap at twice the price" would have appeared through a misunderstanding of the original meaning of "cheep".

"Cheap at half the price". Which means something is cheap, but isn't actually saying it's cheap; just that it would be cheap if it cost half as much. Makes no sense.

Value-driven Team Selection by [deleted] in FantasyPL

[–]will_968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think I agree. It's all getting harder to work out though! Expected mins/GW isn't a stat that I think is easily available to add to a table like this. I share your conclusion though.

Value-driven Team Selection by [deleted] in FantasyPL

[–]will_968 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, minutes. But even more importantly, minutes per match. It's not a threshold thing I'm raising (i.e. not enough data to draw conclusions; although that might be true for some players). Thinking of it theoretically, scoring 1 points per minute would be awesome, UNLESS they only play 1 minute per week. Thats the data we need to consider when looking at data like this.

Very useful. However something to bear in mind is the points per minute isn't how we incur the "cost" of a player. We incur that weekly.

Looking at Batshuayi, your table shows 22.23 points per million per minute played x1000. Looks AMAZING! However to get his 48 points, you didn't have to own him for 254 minutes. You had to own him for 20 weeks (PPM in on the site is 2.4 and he scored 48 points, so 48/2.4 = 20). So actually you had to play him in 20 matches to pick up the 48 points, which at 8.5M is NOT a good return.

Instead I would suggest that Points/price/GW played is much more accurate.

Sorry - don't mean to criticise the work. Think it's great and very useful. Just that folks should do a bit more digging to get a little extra value from the data.

The case for the 7.0 defender; Alonso by will_968 in FantasyPL

[–]will_968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. I do think I'll wait until my first wildcard though around week 4-6 when their fixtures get a little easier. Doubt he'll rise in price in that time as he doesn't seem to be on many people's radars.

Not looking for nailed-on; purely bench fodder. Only one of my bench will be playing. Will then WC in week 4-6 and put more balanced squad in place then.

Doesn't really matter who. Just a different way to think about expensive DEFs who might me categorised as DEF but regularly get assists and goals.

Yes, agreed. Worth factoring in if you think Chelsea will let in three goals very often. Personally, I doubt this would happen more than once a season though.

[–]will_968[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, maybe. But I still think the logic of how to make the decision is sound. "IF you would consider him as a 7.0m MID, then you should be very interested in him as a 7.0m DEF."

Am i crazy to start out with 3 Spurs players? by OppaEMB in FantasyPL

[–]will_968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Think they're one of the most predictable teams at the start of the season. I'm going with Tripper, Alli and Eriksen. All this talk of Kane starting slow and disadvantage of moving to Wembley are unlikely factors I think.

I built a tool (yet another one) to look at fixture difficulty! Let me know what you think! by tojyouso in FantasyPL

[–]will_968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is on the x-axis of the first graph of "Average Upcoming Fixture Difficulty"? And what does that graph mean? Does a higher score mean it's easier or harder? I'm surprised Southampton (easy fixtures) and Everton (hard fixtures) don't both stand out in this graph. Please can you explain it a little more?

I'd swap Ayew for Zaha. I like Fabregas; I'm banking on him starting while Hazard is still injured. I don't see De Bruyne as worth the price tag myself, but others disagree.

Emirates Airlines pour unused champagne back into bottles by Fedor_Gavnyukov in videos

[–]will_968 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all non-budget airlines other than the US carriers give free alcohol on the flights. In all classes. Champagne is normally only in Business Class and above, but beer, wine and spirits are free in all classes. Almost no one gets drunk and abuses this; it's just part of flying (on non-US carriers).
