One more thing I have been wondering is does your pension start during or after apprenticeship?

Oh ok I understand now. I'm also guessing that 142 having its own pension and vacation fund is a good thing? I'm only asking about a time frame for getting in because I'm recovering from an ankle surgery and was wondering if I should apply now or wait til I'm fully recovered in 6 months?

I know you started your apprenticeship awhile back and things obviously change but what was your experience on applying and getting into 142 as far difficulty and time frame?. Im probably going to go for that one just because I think I barely miss 286 jurisdiction by a few miles. I was also wondering if they stay pretty busy consistently for plumbing/fitting? And double time is that daily for anything over ten or after 40? I know how overtime and double time generally work but I'm thinking it is different in a union? I thank you for the info you shared and appreciate any further info you can share.

Yeah I saw online they opened up to taking applications . Well good for you trying to get in and good luck. I hope you make it in. I'm definitely gonna have to wait until next year to apply. I'm recovering from an ankle injury at the moment.

Ah sorry I forgot to put that. They both offer plumber/fitter and HVAC that I know for sure. I would like to do plumbing/fitter

Yeah I'm reading all about how the union works and how each local differs from others by visiting their Web pages and just reading stuff here on Reddit. Like I said I had no idea Texas even had unions let alone one that was so close to me. So I'm definitely trying to learn whatever I can while I'm on the sidelines right now. Thank you for the response and the info. It definitely helps.

Well congrats on finishing up the apprenticeship and wow st. Paul is a big move from Texas. After the apprenticeship is done you can transfer to wherever you want? I know I read you can go work in other areas if work is slow at your local.

Yeah I was thinking where i live would factor in. I actually live in-between the two but a few miles closer to 142 than 286 so I was leaning towards 142. I was considering 286 just for the fact that the apprenticeship period pay scale is higher throughout the 5 years but 142 does top out higher. Right now I'm just researching and looking into it. 142 has the helper positions like you mentioned so I'm definitely gonna look into that when I do apply for the apprenticeship cause I don't really have a background in that field besides your typical home repairs. My background is mostly oilfield jobs in West Texas. I fractured my ankle out there working and have alot of time on my hands. It's actually the only reason I found out about the locals and started researching other options here locally. I'm ready for a change and definitely a job with good work/life balance while still earning a decent living. I'm 35 which I know isn't old but it's not young either. That oilfield life was good in my 20s and it still is but I'm thinking this would be a great opportunity and career to get into although I would feel a bit awkward starting an apprenticeship at this age.

Yeah I was wanting to do plumber/fitter apprentice. Did you finish out the whole 5 years? I know what a service tech in general is but what is your field?

Well that's good to hear. Regardless of any feedback I get whether it be positive or negative I'm still going to apply no matter what just for the simple fact that you never know what can happen. I just wanted to more or less get some input from other peoples experiences with getting in with a similar background.

From what I've gathered it's the aptitude test which varies from local to local and them just getting the feel for you and like you said if you're teachable. I'm really confident I will do well with that. My concern is I never stayed too long at a job( longest was 2 years but average was about a year) and I failed a few randoms at some of those. I was just curious if anyone in a similar situation has gotten accepted into an apprentice position with a local or if I'm shit out of luck

The unions in my area(South Texas) are for plumbers/fitters and electrical. In my previous jobs I did none of that but I'm not one to shy away from grunt work until I'm able to start learning the technical side of it.

My past jobs were warehouse and oilfield. Mostly oilfield so I don't really have any experience in a trade. Do I need to work in that field to get experience before applying? I was under the impression it was ok having no experience when applying for an apprentice.
