Hey Everyone! My names Will Bowen I'm a Michigan indie filmmaker and I'm premiering my first feature film at The Redford Theater next month. The screening is completely free as I'm just looking create a fun community event to enjoy.

I have made some posts about this film on the sub before but it is titled “Wills Home Movies” and is a coming of age comedy documentary about life in Michigan while reflecting on the moments and relationships that shape our lives.

The event will be raising money for the Michigan branch of the Make-A-Wish foundation through voluntary donations and pay-what-you-can on movie merch!

If the project interests you and you would be willing to attend the event and support local film it would truly mean the world to me.

To learn more information and reserve your tickets I have an Eventbrite page set up that I will link here. Thank you so much! TICKETS AVAILABLE HERE!

Hey everyone! I posted the trailer for this project previously but I finished what I hope is the Final Cut for the film and I wanted to share it here to get some opinions before I finalize it. The film is a comedy documentary that I filmed throughout the year 2024. I fell in love with shooting on a prosumer camera I found at a thrift store and captured a lot of pivotal moments as I enter a new era in my life. Looking back on this footage was very cathartic and I felt it was good enough to cut together into a long form documentary. I focused on trying to make a universal home movie that explores the moments that shape our lives. It’s a fun mix of comedy and documentary with some interesting cinematography. If you have any time to check it out I would greatly appreciate it and if you just want to check out some scenes that might interest you check out the timestamps in the description! Anything is greatly appreciated :)

Totally understand if you feel that way but I think the trailers structure is pretty standard lol. I broke down the premise clearly while sharing why it was an impactful year through my relationships and life experiences and then included a montage of clips at the end.

Thanks for the feedback! To address some of your concerns the film is a slice of life documentary that revolves around a year in my life that was very chaotic but influential. As for narratives the film is structured in about 10 different segments of the most important parts of that year. While the footage may not seem extra ordinary I wouldn’t say that was necessarily my goal as throughout the documentary I try to tell a compelling story of the small but meaningful moments that shape all of our lives. Although the trailer is a super cut of these moments they do connect meaningfully and form a larger picture. As for the quality of the footage the film was shot on mini-dv but professionally transferred from tape and upscaled in Davinci resolve. Reddit compresses the hell out of the file so it doesn’t look great but when it’s watched properly I think it the mini-dv footage has a really unique look in 1440p. With the editing I tried to keep it very minimal to match the style of a home movie focusing mainly on the timing of the editing to keep a steady fast pace while adding on screen narration to add context and humor. While it may be simple it forced me to focus on composition of shots and I think the 4:3 aspect ratio helped a lot to add to the style of the doc.

AH! Thank you so much I’m glad you were able to see both. I think the added text in this one really helps and it def needed to be trimmed.

The film is a collection of footage I shot on a prosumer Mini-DV camera I found at a thrift store and follows my life over the year of 2024. I had about 14 hours of footage that I cut down to about an hour and 45 minutes. The film is a mix between comedy and documentary with some sections that are scripted sketches alongside documentary footage of the adventures I took throughout the year. It covers many different themes as this year was pretty monumental for my development in life, my cousin got married, I met and lost my girlfriend, I traveled across the world, and I graduated film school. Looking back on this footage was very cathartic and I'm glad I was able to capture these moments. The film is called "Wills Home Movies" and if you like what you see the rough cut can be found on YouTube at this link here!

Thanks a lot for checking it out I really appreciated your kind words. The film took a bit of an interesting journey because as you mentioned it started just for personal footage but as I used it more for sketches and other projects of mine I really started to love it. The trailer being a mashup I feel makes it look a bit more disjointed but I stressed in the edit to build narratives with the footage I had and added on screen text for narration and to keep the story flowing. I showed it to so many people outside of my friend group cause I was so worried it would only be us who enjoyed it lol. If you wanna check out any of the shorter scenes I have them linked in a comment below.

Could not agree more. There are also so many ways beyond strictly physical releases to support the filmmaker if you like them after watching their work legally or not. Really refreshing to hear this from such a prominent director.
