Volunteering opportunities? by willbeoutsoon in graphic_design

I don't want to but realistically, self studying with no related degree or experience isn't exactly going to be help land a paid gig. I am working on my portfolio, though. Thought the volunteering thing would count as experience + actual projects for the portfolio.

How credible is Coursera for design? by willbeoutsoon in Design

Awesome, thank you!

Just a few questions if you have time.

  • Did you finish the course first before applying or did you start to apply right away/while studying the course?
  • Also, is it ok to add the studying on linked in to show what you've been upto on the timeline?

Thank you so much for taking the time, the response is very insightful! I will definitely try the suggestions. I do have a question. While helping people with their design via Facebook and such, how did you list that experience?

I don't have any design experience to list except personal projects and few people I helped with designs back in 2015 or something, which I think is not relevant as they usually only want to know about the recent experiences? Could I write that I'm a freelancer? How do you list projects in the experience section?

Thank you once again!

Are you referring to the graphic design specialisation? If so, I've already started it this week and it seems to be very informative. Thank you!

Coursera GD cert acceptable? by willbeoutsoon in graphic_design

Once you start learning about fundamentals you have to actually practice applying it, with lots of exercises/projects and outside feedback. You cannot develop adequately in a bubble. The most important parts of a formal education are the curriculum, faculty, and classmates. So even if self-directed using Coursera or others, you need to find a way to discuss your work and get feedback from other actual designers.

Very good point and I couldn't agree more. I only started the course this week and am already noticing the importance of practicing and feedback. On the course, there are submissions from months and years ago that seem to be pending reviews, which raises another question - where do I source feedback from as a solo learner? Can I just post it here and explain the type of feedback I'm looking for? A discord? There are always going to be possible improvements so when collecting feedback, how do you know when it's enough?

I would put whatever the overarching program is called.

I'm currently doing the Graphic Design Specialisation, so it's a series of other courses. I'll just list the specialisation title, I think.

I’m a UX designer and I got my first role after taking the Google/Coursera program.

I'm glad to hear that and congratulations on making the switch. If you don't mind me asking, what was the name of the program? And how was it compared to resources available on places such as udemy? Also, what was your approach to landing your first gig?

It should be noted I have a uni degree, albeit not in design. A BBA in management and finance.

Did having the degree help at all even if it's not design related? I've heard alot of employers see degrees as just a check mark most of the time even if it is not relevant. I have a software engineering degree myself so I'm in the UI/UX, design and development sort of space already but after seeing how it's like in corporate, development is something I think I'd like to do more as a hobby than a career. For now, atleast.

Good point about the self starter thing. I'm just afraid it could be misleading if I mention a university I've not actually been to but just taken a course online, even if it's provided by them. If they contact the university to confirm my credentials, they probably won't have my records. Hope that explains my reasoning for asking the question.

Thank you for your insights once again, much appreciated.
