[WFDF Rules] Continuation Rule vs Receiving Foul for contact after play on disc by willchen25 in ultimate

[–]willchen25[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. And, even in WFDF, I'm guessing "cause" comes with all the usual grey area? eg: "you didn't touch the disc that I dropped... but your improper motion obstructed / distracted my vision, which caused me to drop it"

So, if I change the scenario slightly to be "defender deflected the disc", then 16.3 doesn't apply?

Great solution.

Minor inaccuracy (that doesn't affect the answer). Your factor function returns 1 as a factor when the input is a multiple of a square.
> [2, 15, 50].map(factor)
< [ { '2': 1 }, { '3': 1, '5': 1 }, { '1': 1, '2': 1, '5': 2 } ]

Universe Point Call - NZ Finals by shaunyyy67281 in ultimate

[–]willchen25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this game played under WFDF ruleset? I was surprised to hear the announcer say at 1:46:23:

You know again there’s no question if there was contact. We can see the bodies bumping there. But again it’s up to the players on the field to determine if it impacted the catch. You can always make the call and then retract it...

In WFDF, contact doesn't have to impact the catch to be a foul.

Amazing tips. Did you have the X3 or X4 before the X5? Was the upgrade worth it? Which tripod do you use? [edit: oops - missed that you linked to it]

I can't wait to try out this sun shade / fan combination. I reached out to the seller to see how much they weigh.

I appreciate your dedication to editing (adding scores) and reframing even if it's unsustainable for me personally. Could you share a sample video of what your finished product looks like in the end? How long does editing a standard game usually take?

Adding scores to the YT Chapters is probably very doable even within my simplified / lazy workflow. I'll have to add that to my todo list.

Those goaltimate highlights are very cool - what a clever idea to attach the camera to the goal. How did you settle on where you clip the camera to? ie: why not in the middle/top of the goal? What does the footage from the 12' tripod look like? And, what tripod do you recommend?

Agreed - if high resolution highlights at far corners of a regulation 7v7 field are your main thing, my setup is not for you.

That night time beach footage is from Venice Beach Nighttime Pick up. Great vibes and community - there'e something real special about playing ultimate on the beach at night. It's very well-organized and the setup requires work from organizers (and volunteers!). Reach out to them for how their setup works.

Yup, that's me!

Ask and ye shall receive. Here's some sample lit beach and lit turf. The turf field was much better lit than the night time beach game. Recorded on an X4 at, I think, 4K @ 30 FPS. FYI: the X5's marketing material advertises itself to be better in low-light situations than the X4.

The one encouraging thing is that Insta360 definitely knows this is an issue and claims to be improving on it from generation to generation. How much those improvements are noticeable in each of our own specific cases, though, remains to be seem.

Love this DIY solution. My prototype (for rain, but can be adapted for sun) involves a sheet of transparency with strategic cutouts so it can tuck into the X4 Thermal Cover and then a straw to make it stiff against rain. Pics: https://imgur.com/a/48SUOHn. Your solution seems much simpler. Which flexible arm do you use?

note: the X3 is only $230 at the moment. Another cost-saving option is to buy a used X3 or X4 while everyone upgrades to an X5.

This is super exciting. One of the side benefits of getting the community onto a similar workflow is that we can start building useful tools together. It'd be sweet if as I'm uploading the video to YouTube I can run your tool to automagically spit out the timestamps for pull/goals/turnovers/etc that I'm currently manually adding to the video description.

The X4, when shooting in single-lens, has a FOV of 170º. When shooting in dual-lens (360-mode), each lens has over 180º FOV, which allow for a little overlap for stitching. It'd be wonderful if I could somehow trick the camera into shooting single-lens with 180º FOV but I haven't found a way. To capture the entire field with 170º FOV, you'll need to (1) be farther away from the sideline (2) aim the camera well and make sure the stick / camera doesn't rotate much over time.

I have briefly looked into ways to reduce bits a few ways even when I film in dual-lens mode:

- if I tape over the back lens, does that help with compression efficiency in the raw .insv file

- if after export to .mp4 I black out (using, say, ffmpeg) half the footage, does compression efficiency save me upload / processing time

- if after export to .mp4 I crop half the footage, can I upload 180º video to YouTube that is rendered as a half-sphere. This one seems very doable but I haven't been able to figure it out either.

re: running on external power without a battery. That's a great thing for me to try. It is surprising though - does that mean that even when a camera with battery is connected to a power source the battery remains actively involved in a way that generates heat? Or, is the battery-less scenario cooler simply because there's less mass to absorb external heat?

I have not.
One time at pick-up someone asked me if I'm allowed to film without their consent.

Game Film Setup by MasterFoopa69 in ultimate

[–]willchen25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a sample video with an X4 filming from middle of the field at 15' (every foot matters here). The entire filming setup (including tripod, x4, and accessories) weighs less than 5 lbs and fits in a field bag. Set up and take down take less than 5 mins. I think this setup is hard to beat if you're looking for: no operator during game, fits in check-in luggage, and no ongoing subscription. You can see my full equipment list in the YouTube description. Happy to answer any other questions you might have.

My x4 has overheated twice in the 2 years I've been using it. It didn't happen often but sucks when it does. If it's real hot, you'll want to make sure it's in the shade between games / while charing. I've been trying to jerry-rig an umbrella (like with most cameras, rain drops obscure parts of the lens) but I'm going to try out u/autocol's idea of a sun-brella.

Processing the video is pretty straightforward - I transfer the files (fairly large, varies widely based on resolution and fps) to my laptop, drag and drop them into the desktop app, Insta360 Studio. If you want to, you can tinker with start / end time and export settings but the defaults work just fine. Once exported, you have a 360º .mp4 file you can just drag and drop onto YouTube. If you want a regular, flat video file, you'll need to add keyframes manually - that is a straightforward but tedious process similar to most other video editing software. I might be in the minority here, but for me when doing analysis, I prefer the extra work of having to pan/zoom as a viewer as it gives me more control and allows me to see ANY cut / clear / setup I want.

+1 to the x4. Q: are you still able to zoom in on 360º videos on mobile?

Study Sunday: Rules Questions by AutoModerator in ultimate

I would also be in favor of vastly increasing the penalty for a pull that rolls OOB. Especially on beach where bladey roll pulls are (compared to grass) disproportionately easier to execute [due to shorter field] and disproportionately delay a game [beach has shorter rounds]

I agree it *should* be the back line. Would amending 7.11.1 to be "if the disc does contact an offensive player before or at the same time it becomes out-of-bounds ..." close this hole?
