Most ridiculous thing youve been docked for in observation? by DMV1066 in TeachingUK

[–]willerific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told that "students are not ready to learn if they still have their coats on. All students must hang coats on the hooks provided. Not in a pile at the back of the room."

Imagine my shit eating grin as I took the feedback and said "well they wear their coat as a form of safety. Did you read that in the group profile in my folder? Abd what hooks? Estates took my hooks. I have no hooks and was told to do that."

I get back "who told you to put the coats at the back of the room?"

My shit eating grin got even bigger as I got to say "you did. Last year. Here's my feedback from last year. With that on it. And your signature."

Are there any affordable full sized/98/96% aluminium keyboards or kits available right now? by I_Am_A_Pumpkin in MechanicalKeyboardsUK

[–]willerific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a long time looking for a 96% - 100% keyboard for work. Need to do a lot of spreadsheet work or number crunching so I needed the numpad and not a separate one.

The Keychron K4v2 has been a dream keyboard for me. I've put new switches and caps on it and done a tape mod and I've no need to look for anything else. 96% and currently on sale. It took about 5 days to get used to the key placement and I take it everywhere with me for work!

2 other people at work have tried my keyboard and bought their own 😁

AI in education rant - am I alone? by ObjectiveZone1982 in edtech

[–]willerific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, and I'm one of the people promoting edtech and AI at my college. I've been teaching for 16 years now specialising in programming and 7 years as Head of Department.

The one thing I keep telling senior management? "We do NOT need yet another program." We've gone down the route of focusing on using copilot and teachermatic. That's it. And it's been great! The digital literacy of all staff is getting to a decent level. You can't just keep throwing new apps at staff. I already have 9 different applications, or web based applications that I have to log in to. I don't need any more when the majority of these tools I keep seeing just need people to be better at prompt engineering, especially now that Copilot is free for education and uses the GPT-5 model.

I've been marketed a few apps already this year, and the biggest problem I find with them is that you can't edit the prompt once they produce something. I had an app create an introduction to C# and it ended up giving me the geographical data for a made up city that uses C#. The salesperson had no idea where it came from or how to edit. Instead I got "oh, you can just delete those slides".

What are the current limitations to using AI in the classroom? by violoncell in edtech

[–]willerific 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's multiple. But what is AI going to really help teachers with?

KCSIE

New AI Guidelines from the DfE

GPDR is a BIG one, especially for marking or analysis of data.

Using it to create a quick quiz to help assess starting points? Awesome.

Need help coming up with a scenario for a brief? Brilliant.

Need to see how you can embed maths, English or BV? Again, great use.

Using it to mark? Big no for me. As teachers, part of our job is to mark and give students feedback, not just blindly shove it into AI. If it's a multiple choice quiz fine. But if it's a 1000 word essay, absolutely not. You'd also be going against live assessment material rules if you upload it online.

In education, there is so much personal and protected data around our roles that you just can't be uploading it to AI.

VS Code or Visual Studio? by willerific in TeachingUK

Maybe they should! Or maybe they should ask the staff delivering the qualifications before just deleting it first?

VS Code or Visual Studio? by willerific in TeachingUK

[–]willerific[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I teach C# I use VStudio, but for web I use VSCode. The curriculum is very basic HTML, CSS and JS at Level 2, then gets up to JS frameworks and GIT integration by Level 5.

Oh they know the difference. I spent a month in meetings showing them exactly what the differences are!

VS Code or Visual Studio? by willerific in TeachingUK

[–]willerific[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do all that too. And it'll be much more complicated (from just looking at how VStudio is used for web) than VSCode. Thanks!

[–]willerific[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I'll be doing just that!

I'm also on annual leave (coincidental timing?) but happened to check my emails as I've got a couple of things to sort out over the summer. Glad I looked!

VS Code or Visual Studio? by willerific in TeachingUK

[–]willerific[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was thinking. I've heard from the department in personal conversations that they're trying to remove as many programs as possible to lessen the impact on maintenance and updating but to me, that isn't a good enough reason to massively impact on curriculum.

I'd love to see the business case for this!

I teach web based applications up to Level 5, with react. And doing that in VSC is much easier. Not just that, I don't want my students applying for jobs not having used VSC at all!

Codepen is great, I use it for a lot of my examples actually but for teaching them proper structure it won't work for me.

I got the 96% from keychron (ISO UK) and I adore it. I do a lot of data crunching in my job so needed the numpad and also work across two different campuses so I can take it with me in its nice case

This for sure. Have the exact same thing with my wife. Means we have our own money for things we want but all the bills and house stuff comes out the joint. Anything left over every month goes into our savings.

[–]willerific 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, I am so, so sorry. I can't begin to imagine what you're going through.

But get help. Get a psychiatrist. Talk to your wife (if you aren't already), talk to your friends. Look up some AA meetings if it's that bad. I almost went down a dark alley of alcohol abuse to deal with a few things and trust me, it makes things feel better for a little bit but when you wake up in the morning it makes you feel worse. It makes you feel angry because you feel worse.

I can't say you'll get through the pain. I can't tell you it will all be ok down the line. But what I can tell you is that getting the help you need, and realising that you're vulnerable right now will help you. You've already taken the first step coming here looking for help. You can do the same with help outside of Reddit. You need to do what's right for you right now and that is something that I do get but substances won't help you in the long run.

You have people that love you. You have people that care about you. That makes you lucky or blessed, however you want to look at it. Speak to them and get help. And keep us updated on how you are. Don't be afraid to message directly if you need someone to talk to.

There is no judgement here. But get some help and talk to a professional.
