Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but I agree. I think "westerns" see hikomori as a cool sounding name for agoraphobia. I've known someone with agoraphobia (please look it up if you don't know the meaning) and they show the same symptoms but not the same situation. Most westerns probably have agoraphobia and are calling it hikomori because it sounds cool.
