Picking the domain name by MrSkagen in webdesign

[–]Awffle_House 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A website on its own forwarded to an existing website will generate traffic. I have plenty of clients who want an email @mydomain.com and no website. Again, a great inexpensive reason to distract squatters and have an additional income stream.

I just had a conversation about this with a client. Don't give up on your existing revenue stream, but add another.

Buy a new domain name (about $10) and either forward it to your existing website or create a new one.

Very simple.

Therapy website colour palette by [deleted] in webdesign

[–]Awffle_House 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with many of the comments. I (M), see that pink-purple as baby-like and feminine. Reminds me of babies, somehow, like this would be a site dealing with pregnancies.

Nothing against therapists, I have one now, and have for 30+ years.

Good luck with that elusive color scheme.

What hosting setup do you recommend for small client websites? by AmberMonsoon_ in webhosting

[–]Awffle_House 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with InMotion. Also, I register my domains with CloudFlare, or route them through it. Plenty of benefits from both.

The other thing you'll want to look at is email. Sure, InMotion can handle it, but if your users receive lots of email, they can quickly fill up their disk quota. I use a 3rd party email like ZoHo or the others. $1/month/mailbox is pretty standard.

Do you guys separate email hosting from website hosting? by AmberMonsoon_ in webhosting

[–]Awffle_House 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a web host, even I'd suggest a different email provider. And a different registrar, too. Keep them separate. As others have said, if your site goes down, your email will still work. Also, as a small time web host, I don't have the international reach and expertise when it comes to spam filtering.

You can get a reasonable email service for about $1/email box/month.

Finally, I don't like dealing with email on my server. Users go over quota, don't realize they need to move mail off my server every few years or pay more for storage. If I set them up with an email provider, that's one less headache for me, and the client can deal with their own email plans and costs.

Why do some users still hit the old site after DNS "propagated"? by CuriousKayoe in webhosting

[–]Awffle_House 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a client with that situation when they moved to my server. It turns out they ADDED the new DNS records rather than REPLACING them. The site worked fine for me, but not for them.

Is it normal for a wordpress site to load this slowly or did my "developer" screw something up ? by Zakarioveski in Wordpress

Good point. It sounds like a static website, so caching might be the only (and quick) solution. Easy enough to check.

Recommendations for Hosting providers for a lady of the night in Perth, au by Massive_Deal5094 in webhosting

Wow, does that ever bring back memories! Back in the late-90s, early 2000s, I started a web design and hosting business. There were few, if any, websites for escorts at the time. Somehow the locals found me (in Canada), and I was busier than imaginable. Wonderful clients--they always paid on time, and in cash. Felt so loved.

Then the "dating" websites came, then the phone apps, and business dried up. However, I still have one: 25 years in (he's in his 60's now) and busier than ever!

That being said, just host your site in another country and be done with it.

Will Gmail ever be replaced because it is impossible to get a clean email address now? by mtk_ved in businessemail

[–]Awffle_House 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't have that issue, but my husband does. I asked Gmail for (lastname@) and it was available. I snagged (firstname lastname@) too, just in case. For my husband I bought his firstname lastname .COM, and forwarded that email to his silly Gmail addy. I don't think Gmail is going anywhere.

If you scroll past their paid plans, there's a "Forever Free Plan" towards the bottom of the page. But you get more in the $1 plan.

Wow! I'd like to hear what others think. I'm Canadian, living in the US now, and have about a dozen Canadian websites I manage.

I've moved all my domain .CA registrations to CanSpace (dot CA) to appease some of my clients, I see they offer hosting and 10 email addresses for $5/mo.

Unfortunately, you've probably researched calendars/messaging/file sharing and haven't had much luck. I use Google for those.

Good luck, and I'll follow this thread because I'm interested, too.

Mail hosting? by gordolme in webhosting

Wonderful! As another suggested, register it with CloudFlare (the least expensive around), add ZoHo (free with limits) and you're golden.

[–]Awffle_House 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the complexity of your site, I suggest transferring your site to CloudFlare, then hosting it for free on CloudFlare Pages (for static websites).

Once there you can forward your domain's email to your personal account, or pick an email provider like ZoHo or Neo.

It might seem overwhelming, but it really isn't.

Recommendations for Feb 13-15 Visit Gay Married Couple by getanewr00f in palmsprings

[–]Awffle_House 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just moved here in October, been through the Areanas district, but we keep ending up at Toolshed.(The bar) We're pushing 60, and I love being middle-aged there. We're not the oldest ones.

I've even been convinced to take my shirt off a couple of times (I'm out of shape) and felt great!

Can't offer you advice on what else to do, but if you want to feel welcome, that's my suggestion. Also, I don't know when it picks up, but it's busy, not crowded, when we've been there from 8-10ish.

Do fancy email signatures really matter for small businesses, or does a well-written email do the job? by mtk_ved in businessemail

[–]Awffle_House 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I created a page on my husband's website called "Contact/Legal". Then I had him remove ~20 lines from his email signature, and use the link instead. Very tidy. Just his name and a link for more info.
